Chapter 9 - The Forbidden Study and the Silver Key

The silver key clicked inside the intricate brass lock of the cedar cabinet.

Gabriel pulled open the heavy doors.

Inside sat stacks of handwritten letters, velvet jewelry boxes, and a massive leather-bound photo album embossed with the silver hawk and rose.

Gabriel lifted the album carefully and placed it on the velvet viewing table.

“This album belonged to Isabella Costa,” Gabriel said, his voice reverent. “No one has opened it since her funeral.”

Tessa stepped closer, her hands trembling.

Gabriel turned the heavy parchment pages.

Black-and-white photographs showed generations of the Costa family: severe-looking men in vintage suits, elegant matriarchs in lace, and grand European estates.

Then, Gabriel turned to the final section of the album.

These were color photographs from the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Tessa gasped.

In one photo, two young women sat on the sunlit terrace of the manor, laughing together over tea.

One was Isabella Costa—regal, dark-haired, with Gabriel’s sharp cheekbones.

The other woman was undeniably Tessa’s mother, Elena.

She looked radiant, wearing a silver pendant with a hawk and a rose.

“They were inseparable,” Gabriel whispered, his eyes wide with profound realization.
