Chapter 3 - The Fortress on the Fortieth Floor

The sun rose over the skyline in streaks of pale gold and slate gray.

Tessa stood in the high-ceilinged penthouse guest suite of the Grand Oak Haven, unable to remember if she had slept even an hour.

A fresh change of clothes had been delivered at dawn: a tailored navy pencil skirt, an ivory silk blouse, and low Italian leather heels.

Everything fit her with unsettling precision.

At 7:45 a.m., Marco knocked on the heavy oak suite door.

“Miss Lynn. Mr. Costa is waiting.”

Twenty minutes later, they arrived at Costa Tower—a monolith of dark glass and steel piercing the city clouds.

The private elevator did not stop until floor forty.

When the mirrored doors slid open, Tessa stepped into an empire of marble, polished walnut, and soundproof glass.

Security personnel in bespoke suits stood at every checkpoint, their faces stone-cold.

Her desk sat directly outside a pair of massive double mahogany doors.

On the desk sat a crystal vase with fresh white lilies and a single leather-bound folder containing her schedule.

The double doors opened.

Gabriel stepped out, holding a silver coffee cup.

He wore a bespoke three-piece charcoal suit without a tie, the top collar button casually undone.

“Good morning, Miss Lynn,” he said, his voice deep and commandingly smooth.

“Good morning, Mr. Costa,” Tessa replied, squaring her shoulders. “If I am going to work for you, I need to understand my duties. I have no background in corporate finance or... your other businesses.”

Gabriel walked to her desk, placing a thick folder in front of her.

“Your duties are simple. You manage my private calendar. You filter every human being who wishes to speak with me. And you stay where I can see you.”

“Why?” Tessa asked, meeting his piercing gaze. “There are hundreds of qualified corporate secretaries in this city. Why put me here?”

Gabriel leaned in slightly.

May you like

His scent enveloped her senses—dark, intoxicating, and impossibly refined.

“Because you do not flinch when you look into the dark, Tessa,” he whispered. “And in this building, darkness is currency.”
