Chapter 8 - When the Gold Runs Dry, the Mistress Runs Faster

The next morning, the winter sun broke through the gray Manhattan clouds, illuminating the front page of the New York Post.
MARITIME MELTDOWN: DOMINIC MARLOWE OUSTED AS HEIRESS WIFE SEIZES BILLION-DOLLAR FLEET!
Beneath the headline was a massive, high-resolution photograph of Elena in her crimson velvet gown, looking magnificent and unbothered, juxtaposed with a grainy photo of Dominic being escorted out of Bennett Tower by armed security.
In a luxury duplex on the Upper East Side, Vanessa Cross sat on her white leather sofa, frantically packing diamond bracelets, designer handbags, and couture dresses into four oversized Louis Vuitton suitcases.
Her brother, Tyler, paced the living room, biting his fingernails until they bled.
"Vanessa, we're finished!" Tyler panicked. "The FBI raided Vanguard Logistics in the BVI at dawn! They seized the shell company servers! Marcus Cole filed an emergency federal injunction—all the offshore bank accounts are frozen!"
"Shut up, Tyler!" Vanessa shrieked, shoving a fur coat into her luggage. "I told Dominic to keep those transfers under two hundred thousand! He got greedy and transferred five million last month to buy that yacht in Monaco!"
The front door of the apartment suddenly banged open.
Dominic Marlowe stood in the doorway, his eyes bloodshot, his beard unkempt, his soaked suit rumpled and smelling of stale alcohol.
Vanessa froze, clutching a diamond necklace to her chest.
"Vanessa," Dominic breathed, stepping into the apartment with a desperate, frantic look in his eyes. "Thank God you're still here. My accounts are frozen. Elena locked me out of the penthouse. We need to take your car and drive to your brother’s house in Connecticut. We can use the offshore emergency reserves to hire a defense team."
Vanessa slowly straightened up, her panic instantly hardening into a wall of cold, venomous contempt.
"What offshore reserves, Dominic?" Vanessa asked, her voice dripping with mockery. "The feds froze Vanguard two hours ago. There is no money."
Dominic blinked, stumbling forward. "Then... then we use your personal accounts! The jewelry I bought you! The Cartier watches! We sell them, we get cash, and we rebuild! We love each other, Vanessa. You told me you loved me!"
Vanessa let out a cruel, barking laugh that cut through Dominic like broken glass.
"Love you?" Vanessa scoffed, crossing her arms over her chest. "Dominic, are you genuinely that delusional? Did you honestly think a twenty-eight-year-old model fell in love with a bald-spot-hiding, insecure middle-aged corporate parasite?"
Dominic looked as if he had been slapped across the face. "Vanessa... what are you saying?"
"I was with you because you were supposed to take over Harold Bennett’s four-billion-dollar empire!" Vanessa sneered, stepping right into his face. "You told me Elena was a stupid, fat cow who would roll over and hand you the keys to the kingdom! You promised me a penthouse on Fifth Avenue and a seat on the board of the Metropolitan Museum! Instead, you got completely destroyed by the very woman you spent seven years laughing at!"
"I did it for us!" Dominic shouted, tears of humiliation burning in his eyes.
"No, you did it for your own pathetic ego," Vanessa said, turning her back on him and zipping her suitcase. "And now you have nothing. Get out of my apartment before I call the police and tell them you're trespassing."
"Your apartment?!" Dominic yelled. "I paid the lease on this place with Bennett corporate funds!"
"Which means it isn't yours either," Vanessa said smoothly. "Tyler, carry these bags down to the Uber. I'm flying to Miami."
Dominic stood frozen in the middle of the hallway as Vanessa and her brother walked past him without looking back once.
He fell to his knees on the hardwood floor, clutching his head in his hands.
Every mocking word he had ever spoken about Elena outside that private dining room at Aurelia House echoed back in his ears, louder and louder, until he couldn't breathe.
“She’s completely invisible... she’s simply expensive paperwork... that’s exactly where I need her.”
