Chapter 9 - The Forged Power of Attorney Exposed

At 4:30 PM, Richard’s private investigators brought another critical figure into the Bennett Tower legal suite: Walter Briggs, the corrupt public notary who had stamped the fraudulent Power of Attorney used to sell my home and liquidate my personal savings.
Briggs was a small, nervous man in his late fifties, sweating profusely as he sat across from Victoria Sterling and myself.
“Mr. Briggs,” Victoria began, projecting a high-resolution scan of the Power of Attorney onto the conference screen. “This document claims that on November 12th, while Claire Vance was held without bail at the Metropolitan Detention Center, you physically met with her, verified her government ID, and witnessed her sign this authorization granting Ryan Vance full power of attorney over her assets.”
Briggs swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing. “I... I recall that meeting, yes. Everything was strictly by the book.”
I leaned forward, sliding a certified security log from the Metropolitan Detention Center across the table.
“On November 12th, Mr. Briggs,” I said softly, “the Metropolitan Detention Center was under a mandatory 24-hour total infectious disease lockdown due to a severe meningitis outbreak. No visitors, no attorneys, and no public notaries were permitted past the security sally port. The visitor logs show zero entries for that entire 48-hour window.”
Briggs turned pale as chalk.
“Furthermore,” Victoria added, “we have bank records showing a $25,000 cash deposit into your personal account at Chase Bank on November 13th, originating from a cashier’s check purchased by Ryan Vance.”
Briggs’s hands began to shake uncontrollably. “I... I was just doing a favor for Ryan. He told me Claire had verbally agreed to it! He said she wanted him to manage the house so it wouldn't go into foreclosure! I didn't know he was stealing it!”
“You committed second-degree forgery, offering a false instrument for filing, and criminal conspiracy in a major financial fraud scheme,” Victoria stated coldly. “You are facing up to seven years in state prison. Unless, of course, you sign a sworn affidavit right now detailing exactly who paid you, who supplied the forged signature stamp, and who instructed you to backdate the filing.”
Briggs grabbed the pen before Victoria could even finish her sentence. “Give it to me. I’ll write everything. I’ll testify against Ryan Vance tomorrow morning if you want me to!”

Within twenty minutes, Briggs signed a comprehensive, ten-page confession implicating Ryan Vance, Donald Cole, and Madison Cole in a systematic campaign of document forgery, identity theft, and asset stripping.
With every passing hour, the cage Ryan had built for me was closing tighter and tighter around his own neck.
