Chapter 6 - Unmasking Madison Cole's Dark Past

While the marshals took control of Courtroom 402, Richard’s security team escorted me and Noah into a private judicial conference room. Noah was curled up on the leather sofa, happily eating an ice cream cone Marcus had bought him, completely oblivious to the legal hurricane raging just beyond the double doors.
Sitting across from me was Sarah Jenkins, a senior special investigator from the Bennett intelligence network. She opened a thin, crimson folder labeled PROJECT BLACKBIRD.
“Madison Cole isn't just an ambitious accountant’s daughter, Claire,” Sarah said, turning the file toward me. “Her real name is Madison Cowell. Six years ago in Chicago, she operated under the alias Madison Vance—no relation to Ryan, ironically—where she was involved in a nearly identical corporate embezzlement scheme at an industrial logistics firm named Apex Core.”
I skimmed through the confidential reports, my eyes widening. “She targeted the Chief Operating Officer of Apex Core, began an affair with him, and framed his wife for tax fraud?”
“Almost identical,” Sarah confirmed. “The wife spent fourteen months in county jail before committing suicide while awaiting trial. Madison and the COO settled out of court, liquidating the company’s pension reserves for $14 million. The charges against Madison were dropped due to a sudden disappearance of key server logs—a specialty of her father, Donald Cole.”
Cold disgust washed over me. “So Ryan wasn't the mastermind. He was just their latest useful idiot.”
“A willing idiot,” Richard added from the doorway. “Ryan was deeply in debt from secret, disastrous high-stakes derivative trading. Donald Cole found Ryan through a private brokerage debt registry and offered him a way out: help them fleece Harrington Development of $38 million, pin the entire disaster on you, and walk away with a fresh identity and forty percent of the take.”
I looked through the one-way glass into the courtroom corridor. Ryan and Madison were currently cornered by four federal agents and their own attorney, Gregory Stone. Madison was screaming at Ryan, jabbing her manicured finger into his chest while Ryan ran his hands through his hair in a state of absolute, frantic breakdown.
“They are turning on each other already,” I observed.
“Rats always fight when the ship sinks,” Richard said coldly. “Donald Cole is currently at the Harrington corporate headquarters on Park Avenue. He called an emergency meeting of the Board of Directors for 11:00 AM. He intends to present a fraudulent corporate restructuring plan that will officially write off the missing $38 million as unrecoverable operational losses, allowing his offshore shell companies to absorb the funds permanently.”
I checked my watch. It was 10:15 AM.
“Does Donald Cole know Claire is out of custody?” Victoria Sterling asked.
“No,” Sarah answered. “Judge Ross placed a temporary ninety-minute media embargo on the custody proceedings at our request. Ryan and Madison’s phones have been confiscated by federal marshals. Donald Cole still thinks Claire is on a prison bus to Danbury and that Ryan is celebrating a custody victory.”
I stood up, adjusting the lapels of my white jacket. I walked over to Noah, kissing his forehead softly. “Noah, sweetie, Grandfather is going to take you to his big house with the indoor pool and the golden retriever. Mommy has to go to the office to finish one last meeting, okay?”
Noah beamed, his blue eyes shining with absolute trust. “Will you be home for dinner, Mommy?”
“I will be home for every dinner for the rest of your life, my love,” I promised.
I looked at Richard. “Father, keep Noah at the Bedford estate under maximum security.”

Richard nodded, his slate-blue eyes gleaming with pride. “And what will you be doing at Harrington Development, Claire?”
“I’m going to attend Donald Cole’s board meeting,” I replied, my voice dripping with cold, calculated venom. “And I’m going to show Harrington’s shareholders who really owns the ground they stand on.”
