Chapter 8 - Frozen Accounts and Burning Paranoia

By 2:00 PM, the news hit Wall Street like a category-five hurricane. Major financial news networks ran rolling red banners across their screens: HARRINGTON FRAUD CONVICTION VACATED — BILLIONAIRE RICHARD BENNETT REVEALS DAUGHTER CLAIRE AS NEW CEO — TOP AUDITORS ARRESTED IN $38M CONSPIRACY.

Inside an interrogation room at 26 Federal Plaza, Ryan Vance sat sweating through his bespoke shirt. His tie was undone, his hair disheveled, and his eyes darted frantically between the one-way mirror and the cold steel table.

Assistant US Attorney Marcus Miller walked into the room, dropping a thick red folder onto the table.

“Your bail hearing was denied, Ryan,” Miller said flatly, taking a seat. “You are classified as an extreme flight risk.”

“I have money!” Ryan yelled, his voice cracking with hysteria. “I have $15 million in my private account at Credit Suisse! Set bail at five million! I can pay it right now!”

Miller let out a short, mocking laugh. “You don't have a single penny, Ryan. At 1:15 PM, the United States Department of the Treasury, working in tandem with the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority, issued an emergency freezing order on every single asset associated with Aegis Holdings, Cole & Sterling, and your personal accounts.”

Ryan stared at the prosecutor, his jaw working soundlessly. “Frozen? All of it?”

“Every cent,” Miller replied. “And here is the best part: Madison Cole just spent the last forty-five minutes singing like a canary in Room 4B. She told us everything. She gave us the dates you accessed Claire’s laptop, the audio recordings of you planning the evidence fabrication, and the offshore routing numbers you personally set up.”

Ryan’s face contorted into pure, murderous rage. “That lying, manipulative b—! It was her idea! Madison and her father planned the whole thing! They told me Claire would only serve three years at a minimum-security camp! They promised me I’d have full custody and forty percent of the payout!”

“And you just confessed on federal audio recording, Mr. Vance,” Miller said smoothly, pointing to the glowing red light on the ceiling microphone.

Ryan froze, realizing he had just handed the federal government the final nail in his own coffin. He buried his face in his hands, dry-sobbing in pathetic, unadulterated terror.

Meanwhile, across the city in Brooklyn Heights, a team of legal marshals and private movers arrived at my brownstone. Donald Cole’s renovation crew was forcibly evicted from the premises.

I stood on the front steps of my home, holding a cup of warm coffee, watching as the fraudulent COLE LUXURY PROPERTIES banner was ripped down from the iron gates and tossed into the back of a municipal waste truck.

Victoria Sterling walked up the steps, handing me a certified deed. “The fraudulent sale has been officially nullified by the State Supreme Court. The brownstone is legally and exclusively yours once more, Claire.”

I ran my hand along the original brickwork of the entryway. For the first time in nearly a year, I felt the heavy, suffocating shadow of being a victim lift from my shoulders. But the mission was not entirely finished. Ryan and Madison had destroyed lives before me; I had to ensure they would never possess the power to hurt another family again.
