Chapter 9 - The Ashford Conspiracy Exposed

“Senator Ashford, Evelyn Ashford, you are both under arrest for federal arms trafficking, corporate conspiracy, and filing false police reports,” Agent Miller announced, pulling steel handcuffs from his belt.

The harbor erupted into pure pandemonium.

Camera shutters snapped frantically as news anchors began screaming live updates into their microphones. Senator Ashford attempted to push past the agents, yelling about political immunity, but two burly federal officers forced his arms behind his back and slammed him against the hood of an FBI cruiser.

“Get your hands off him!” Evelyn shrieked, clawing at an officer’s arm. “Do you know who we are? We own this city! Dominic Mercer, you did this! You set us up!”

She broke away from an agent and lunged straight toward me, her manicured nails aimed at my eyes like talons. “You miserable little gutter rat! You destroyed my life!”

Before she could touch a single thread of my coat, Dominic moved.

With terrifying speed, his arm shot out, catching Evelyn by the wrist in an iron grip that brought her instantly to her knees on the wet pavement.

“Do not ever,” Dominic growled, his voice vibrating with a lethal, primal fury that silenced the entire pier, “look at her again.”

He released her wrist with utter contempt. A female federal agent immediately stepped in, twisting Evelyn’s arms behind her back and clicking the cold steel handcuffs around her wrists.

Evelyn looked up from the wet ground, mascara running down her cheeks in black streaks, her designer coat soaked in harbor slush. She looked at Dominic, then looked at me standing beside him—unbroken, protected, and dignified.

“You’re marrying a maid, Dominic,” Evelyn sobbed, her voice cracking with pathetic desperation. “You traded a dynasty for a nobody!”

Dominic looked down at her, his eyes cold and unyielding. “I traded a traitor for the only woman worth protecting in this entire city.”

The federal agents shoved Evelyn into the back of a squad car, slamming the door shut. The sirens wailed as the convoy of law enforcement vehicles pulled away from Pier 42, carrying the ruins of the Ashford political empire into the stormy night.

Dominic turned to face me. The rain poured over us, soaking our hair, but neither of us moved.

“It’s over, Grace,” he said softly, the tension finally leaving his massive shoulders. “They will never touch you or your family again.”

I looked at him—this powerful, terrifying man who had brought down an entire empire just to keep a promise to a homeless girl in a linen closet.

Without thinking, without caring about the rain or the remaining reporters fifty yards away, I threw my arms around his neck.

Dominic’s arms wrapped around my waist, lifting me off the ground and pulling me flush against his chest. I buried my face in his neck, breathing in the scent of rain, cedarwood, and the unmistakable safety of his embrace.

“Thank you,” I whispered into his ear.

Dominic pressed a soft, lingering kiss against the side of my wet temple. “Come home, Grace.”
