Chapter 14 - Healing The Wounds & Facing The Shadows

Six months later.

The autumn leaves across Central Park had turned into a breathtaking tapestry of crimson, amber, and deep gold.

In the sunlit garden of the Brooklyn Heights brownstone, my mother sat in a comfortable wicker chair, laughing joyfully as Caleb showed her his acceptance letter to the Columbia University School of Engineering. Her recovery had been nothing short of miraculous; the surgery had left no residual nerve damage, and her smile was warmer and brighter than it had been in a decade.

I sat at the outdoor cedar table, my nursing textbooks spread out before me. Dominic had insisted on funding my dream, but he honored my independence by letting me earn my Bachelor of Science in Nursing through sheer hard work. I was currently ranked top of my class at Columbia School of Nursing.

The garden gate clicked open.

Dominic walked in, wearing a crisp navy suit, carrying a bouquet of rare white orchids. The moment his eyes found mine, the stern, imposing expression he wore for Wall Street melted into pure warmth and tenderness.

He walked over, bent down, and kissed me deeply, his hand gently resting on the curve of my neck.

“How was the hospital clinical shift, future Dr. Mercer?” he asked, a teasing gleam in his dark eyes.

“Exhausting, messy, and absolutely perfect,” I laughed, wrapping my arms around his waist as he sat beside me. “We helped deliver twin girls in the labor ward today.”

Dominic smiled, kissing the crown of my head. “You were born to heal people, Grace.”

“And you were born to spoil me,” I replied, looking down at the sparkling sapphire ring on my finger.

Caleb walked over, shaking Dominic’s hand with genuine brotherhood. “Dominic, the DA called earlier. The Ashford trial concluded an hour ago.”

The garden fell quiet.

“What was the sentence?” Dominic asked calmly.

“Senator Ashford received twenty-four years in federal prison without the possibility of parole for racketeering and treason,” Caleb reported. “And Evelyn was sentenced to twelve years for corporate fraud, false imprisonment, and evidence tampering.”

I let out a slow, quiet breath. The last remaining shadow of our past had finally been put to rest. There was no anger left in my heart, no desire for vengeance—only a deep, peaceful closure.

“May they find whatever peace they deserve behind bars,” I murmured softly.

Dominic squeezed my hand, his dark eyes filled with absolute serenity. “Their story is over, Grace. Ours is just beginning.”
