Chapter 15 - The Promise In The Penthouse: A New Dawn

One year after the night a loaded gun was pointed at my forehead in a dark utility closet, the grand ballroom of the Park Avenue penthouse was bathed in warm candlelight and soft music.
It was not a networking gala for corporate raiders or corrupt politicians. The room was filled with the people who truly mattered: my mother, glowing with health in an elegant navy dress; Caleb and his college friends; Dr. Vance and his medical team; Mrs. Gable; and the loyal staff members who had kept Dominic’s house running for decades.
I stood before the floor-to-ceiling glass in a simple, breathtaking ivory silk gown with delicate lace sleeves, my chestnut hair cascading in soft curls over my shoulders.
Dominic stood beside me, impeccably handsome in a bespoke black tuxedo, his hand securely intertwined with mine.
The private officiant smiled warmly at us. “By the power vested in me by the State of New York, I now pronounce you husband and wife. Dominic, you may kiss your bride.”
Dominic turned to me. He didn't rush. He looked into my hazel eyes with a reverence that made my soul sing.
He wrapped his strong arms around my waist, lifting me slightly as he brought his lips down to mine in a kiss that promised eternal protection, boundless love, and an unbreakable partnership.
The ballroom erupted into deafening cheers and applause. Caleb whistled loudly, while Mom wiped happy tears from her cheeks.
Later that night, long after the last guest had departed and the penthouse was filled with the peaceful hush of midnight, Dominic and I stood barefoot on the balcony, watching the gentle snowfall dust the rooftops of Manhattan in pure white.
I leaned my head against his broad chest, listening to the steady, strong rhythm of his heartbeat beneath his shirt.
“What are you thinking about, Mrs. Mercer?” Dominic whispered into my hair, his arms wrapped securely around my waist.
I smiled, looking through the glass toward the small, unremarkable hallway closet near the kitchen where our journey had begun.
“I was thinking about cold pasta,” I whispered softly, turning around in his arms to look up into his rugged, beautiful face. “And how an eighty-six thousand dollar debt turned into the greatest gift of my life.”
Dominic chuckled, his deep baritone rumbling through his chest. He leaned down, pressing his forehead against mine, his dark eyes shining with endless devotion under the starlight.
“You never owed me a single cent, Grace,” Dominic murmured, his lips brushing mine with infinite sweetness. “From the moment you stepped into my life, I was the one who was forever in your debt.”
