Chapter 5 - The Diamond Ring & The Broken Mask

The Mercer convoy tore through the rain-slicked streets of Brooklyn at breakneck speed, black SUVs parting traffic with flashing emergency strobes. Inside the lead vehicle, Dominic sat in stony silence, his knuckles white against his knees, radiating a murderous aura that made the armed guards in the front seats look terrified.

I was trembling uncontrollably. “If she touches my mother, Dominic... if she unplugs those monitors—”

“Nobody is touching your mother,” Dominic said, reaching across the leather seat and enclosing my shaking hand in his iron grip. His warmth was the only anchor keeping me from losing my mind. “I have two armed security details stationed on the fourth floor. Evelyn is blocked at the administrative desk, but she brought city health inspectors with bogus warrants.”

When our SUV screeched to a halt outside Brooklyn Methodist, Dominic didn’t wait for his men to open the door. He stepped out into the pouring rain, pulling me under the shelter of his massive umbrella, and strode through the hospital sliding doors like a conquering general.

The fourth-floor lobby was in total chaos.

Evelyn was standing in front of the nurse's station, wearing an opulent white trench coat, waving a thick stack of certified legal documents in Dr. Vance’s face. Two private Ashford security guards and a nervous-looking municipal bureaucrat flanked her.

“I don't care who paid the deposit!” Evelyn shrieked at Dr. Vance. “The patient’s primary guarantor has an open fraud investigation against her! As a board member of the Ashford Charitable Trust, I am ordering an immediate transfer of this indigent patient to the Queens Public Ward!”

“You will do no such thing, Miss Ashford,” Dr. Vance snapped, adjusting his surgical glasses. “The patient is prepped for a critical craniotomy at dawn. Moving her now is tantamount to murder!”

“She’s a nobody!” Evelyn screamed, her aristocratic composure completely shattered by manic rage. “Her daughter is a thieving maid who belongs in a cage!”

“The only person going into a cage tonight, Evelyn, is you.”

Dominic’s voice sliced through the corridor like a broadsword.

The entire lobby froze. Nurses, orderlies, and security guards turned in unison as Dominic walked forward, his tall silhouette radiating absolute authority. I stepped out from beside him, my chin lifted, staring directly into Evelyn’s eyes without a shred of fear.

Evelyn’s face paled for a fraction of a second before her snarl returned. “Dominic! Thank God you’re here. This corrupt surgeon is taking kickbacks from your company accounts to treat his mistress’s family! I came here to protect your assets!”

“Is that so?” Dominic stopped two feet from her. He towered over her, his expression devoid of any human mercy. “Then perhaps you can explain why your signature is on an offshore wire transfer to the state medical inspector’s personal account dated three hours ago?”

Evelyn gasped, taking a frantic step back. “What? That’s absurd! You can’t prove that!”

Dominic glanced at his head of security. “Detain the inspector. Hand him over to the District Attorney’s office in the lobby. If he speaks, offer him full immunity in exchange for Senator Ashford’s tax filings.”

The municipal bureaucrat turned pale as a ghost, dropped his clipboard, and bolted for the fire exit, only to be tackled instantly by Dominic’s guards.

Evelyn stood alone, trembling with rage and terror. She looked around at the nurses who were watching her with open disgust, then pointed a trembling, manicured finger at me.

“You think you’ve won?” Evelyn hissed, her voice vibrating with venom. “You’re nothing but a gutter rat, Grace! Dominic is using you! In three days, when our families merge at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, you will be thrown back into the dirt where you belong!”

Dominic slowly reached into his suit pocket.

He pulled out a heavy, velvet-lined jeweler’s box. He opened it, revealing the flawless 12-carat Harry Winston emerald-cut diamond engagement ring that had been plastered across every fashion magazine in the country.

“The wedding is off, Evelyn,” Dominic said, his voice ringing clearly down the quiet hospital hall.

Evelyn’s breath hitched. “You... you can’t do that. The contracts! The political fallout! My father will destroy you!”

With an effortless flick of his wrist, Dominic dropped the multi-million-dollar diamond ring into a red biohazard waste bin beside the nurse's station.

Clink.

The ring disappeared beneath contaminated medical gauze.

“Tell your father to bring everything he has,” Dominic whispered, leaning close to Evelyn’s ear so only she, Dr. Vance, and I could hear. “Because by Friday morning, the Mercer empire will own every port, every stock, and every debt note your corrupt family has ever signed.”

He turned his back on the sobbing, hysterical heiress and looked at Dr. Vance.

“Proceed with the surgery, Doctor. Miss Howard and I will be waiting.”
