Chapter 6 - THE CORPORATE SNAKE

The tension inside Roman’s corporate headquarters downtown was palpable.

On Monday morning, Roman brought me to his executive suite, introducing me as his personal corporate consultant.

The board members stared at me with unconcealed disdain.

Especially Victor Vance.

Victor was Roman’s chief operating officer—a sleek, ambitious man with slicked-back dark hair and expensive Italian suits.

“A waitress from a French bistro is suddenly our new consultant?” Victor sneered during the mid-morning financial review, leaning back in his leather chair.

“Excuse me, Mr. Vance,” I said, my voice steady as I stood at the head of the mahogany conference table.

“I hold a degree in business administration from the University of Chicago.”

“I worked at Laura because the hours fit my son’s daycare schedule.”

“Not because I lack competence.”

Victor laughed coldly.

“Degrees don't run multi-million-dollar real estate portfolios, sweetheart.”

“Enough, Victor,” Roman’s voice cut through the room like a razor.

“Megan’s credentials are verified.”

“And her judgment is sharper than yours.”

Victor’s jaw tightened.

A venomous flash crossed his eyes before he plastered on a polite, condescending smile.

“Of course, Mr. Roman. Just looking out for the company’s best interests.”

After the meeting adjourned, Roman pulled me into his private office.

“You handled him well,” Roman said, pouring two cups of black coffee.

“He hates me,” I noted, stirring sugar into my cup.

“He hates anyone who threatens his control,” Roman replied darkly.

“Keep your eyes open around Victor, Megan.”

“He’s been with me for ten years, but lately, his ledgers don't add up.”
