Chapter 5 - THE GOLDEN CAGE

Two days later, my apartment building was surrounded.

Not by police.

By Roman’s men.

After the incident at Laura, Roman insisted that my neighborhood was no longer safe.

“My enemies know who helped me,” Roman explained as we sat in his sprawling penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan.

“They are looking for leverage.”

“I am not your leverage, Roman,” I said firmly, setting down my teacup.

“I am a single mother who just wants to raise her son in peace.”

“And I am ensuring you have that peace,” Roman replied, his voice unyielding.

The penthouse was breathtaking.

Floor-to-ceiling glass windows framed the glittering Chicago skyline.

Leo was currently in the adjoining playroom, marveling at an electric train set that seemed larger than our entire old apartment.

“You can’t keep us locked in a golden cage, Roman,” I said, looking out at the gray waters of the lake.

“It’s not a cage, Megan,” Roman stepped closer, his presence warm and overwhelming.

“It’s a fortress.”

“And what happens when you leave?”

“I don't leave,” he murmured, his gaze locking onto mine.

“Not anymore.”

A chill ran down my spine—not of fear, but of dangerous, intoxicating realization.

I was falling for a man I barely knew.
