Chapter 11 - THE AMBUSH AT THE RAIL YARD

“Get down!” Roman roared, shoving David and me behind a heavy stainless steel prep table.

Return fire echoed from the front dining room.

Roman’s security team, waiting outside in the alley, breached the front doors in a coordinated counter-assault.

Flashes of gunfire illuminated the dining room like strobe lights.

“Victor set a trap!” Roman cursed, firing three precise shots toward the hallway.

“He knew we’d come for the logs!”

“We have to move!” I yelled over the deafening noise.

“Through the walk-in freezer! It has an emergency exit leading to the loading dock!”

Roman grabbed my hand.

“David, move!” Roman shouted.

Too late.

A bullet pierced the office doorway, striking David in the shoulder.

He collapsed with a sharp cry.

“Go!” David groaned, clutching his arm.

“Save yourselves!”

Roman hoisted me toward the freezer exit just as Victor Vance’s mercenaries swarmed the kitchen.

We scrambled out into the freezing night air, clutching the manila folder.

A black van intercepted us halfway across the loading dock.

Men in tactical gear jumped out, overwhelming Roman’s bodyguards before they could reach us.

A familiar voice echoed from the van’s open side door.

Victor Vance stepped out, holding a silenced pistol pointed directly at my head.

“Drop the folder, Roman,” Victor smiled wickedly.

“Or the girl and her precious son die tonight.”
