Chapter 7 - The Unmarked Black Vans And The Raid At Dawn

The following morning at 6:00 AM, the exclusive cobblestone street of Mercer in SoHo was completely cordoned off by six unmarked tactical police vans and four black Lombardi executive sedans.

High above the street, inside a sprawling, five-thousand-square-foot penthouse loft, Vanessa Hale was frantically throwing designer clothes, jewelry boxes, and stacks of bearer bonds into three Louis Vuitton trunks.

Her face was swollen, a massive, dark purple hematoma covering her left cheekbone where Massimo’s hand had connected in the St. Regis lounge. Her hands shook uncontrollably as she tried to punch a phone number into her burner mobile.

"Pick up, Grant! Pick up the damn phone!" she shrieked into the receiver.

The line clicked. Grant’s voice came through, weak, slurred, and heavily medicated from his hospital bed.

"Vanessa... the hospital is surrounded by private security... I can’t leave the room..."

"You idiot!" Vanessa screamed, tossing a diamond necklace into a trunk. "The Lombardi old man has gone completely insane! He raided the penthouse! He seized the Midtown vault! The DA has frozen all our offshore accounts in the Caymans! We need to get to the private airstrip in Teterboro now—"

BOOM!

The heavy steel-reinforced loft door blew inward with the deafening roar of a hydraulic ram.

A tactical entry team of twelve heavily armed NYPD officers poured into the foyer, laser sights cutting through the dim loft lighting.

"POLICE! GET ON THE GROUND! HANDS WHERE I CAN SEE THEM!"

Vanessa froze, dropping her phone onto the floor. "Do you know who I am?! My brother is Grant Hale! You can't touch me—"

"Vanessa Hale, you are under arrest for grand larceny in the first degree, interstate wire fraud, identity theft, and conspiracy to commit aggravated assault!" Detective Jack Callahan shouted, kicking the luggage aside and forcing Vanessa face-down onto the hardwood floor.

CLICK-CLACK.

The steel handcuffs snapped tightly around her wrists.

Outside on the cobblestone street, a dozen news vans and paparazzi photographers had already gathered behind the police barricades. Cameras flashed relentlessly as Vanessa was dragged out of the building in her silk pajamas, her bruised face exposed to every major news network in the country.

Watching from across the street, sitting in the back of a black armored Maybach with tinted windows, was Massimo Lombardi.

He rolled down the window two inches.

Vanessa caught sight of the dark silhouette in the back of the car. She lunged against the arresting officers, screaming hysterically:

"Massimo! You old bastard! You can't destroy us! Grant will take everything from Isabella! Everything!"

Massimo looked at her through the glass. He didn't blink. He didn't speak.

He simply raised his hand, tapped the glass twice, and his driver pulled the car smoothly into the morning traffic, leaving the screaming woman to her fate.
