Chapter 6 - The Dead Mother’s Emeralds Worn By A Cruel Mistress

At 6:00 PM, a white courier van screeched to a halt outside the Lombardi brownstone.
Viktor Kozlov stepped out, flanked by two armed operatives. In his hands, he carried a heavy, polished mahogany box lined with faded burgundy velvet.
He marched into the library and placed the box reverently on Massimo’s desk.
"Midtown Safe Deposit Vault 408," Viktor reported. "Vanessa Hale attempted to access the box forty-five minutes ago using a forged power-of-attorney. Our team intervened alongside the Manhattan District Attorney's financial crimes unit. The assets have been recovered."
Massimo reached out with a trembling hand and unlatched the antique brass clasp.
The lid swung open.
Resting against the crushed velvet was the legendary Teresa Lombardi Emerald Suite.
At the center lay a magnificent, twenty-five-carat untreated Colombian emerald pendant surrounded by three tiers of flawless D-flawless diamonds, suspended from a platinum chain. Flanking it were matching drop earrings and the heavy, intricate vintage emerald bracelet.
Isabella stepped forward, her breath hitching as she looked at her mother’s jewelry.
"She wore this," Isabella whispered, her voice trembling with disgust. "Vanessa wore my mother’s bracelet to the Lincoln Center Gala last month while I was locked in the penthouse with cracked ribs."
Massimo lifted the emerald bracelet from the velvet tray. He turned it over in his hand, inspecting the intricate platinum underside.
Along the interior edge of the clasp, the metal was sharp and uneven—a historic defect where a platinum hinge had fractured thirty years ago.
"Your mother never repaired this clasp," Massimo said, his voice heavy with memory. "She said the slight pinch reminded her that beautiful things require care and patience."
He looked at Isabella’s left wrist.
Beneath the fresh purple bruising from Grant’s fingers were two distinct, thin, linear white scars—scars that matched the exact dimensions of the broken platinum hinge.
"When did Vanessa force this on you?" Massimo asked.
"Two weeks ago," Isabella said, her voice hardening into pure steel. "Before the annual Metropolitan Museum preview. Grant wanted a photograph of me wearing my mother's heirlooms to show our private banking syndicate that the family assets were secure. My wrist was swollen from an argument the night before. Vanessa held my arm behind my back while Grant forced the bracelet closed over the swelling. When the clasp sliced into my skin, Vanessa laughed. She looked at me and said, 'Don't worry, Isabella. When you’re locked in an asylum, I’ll wear these emeralds every single night.'"
Massimo set the bracelet down.
He picked up his private mobile phone and dialed the direct line to the Police Commissioner of the City of New York.

"Commissioner," Massimo said, his voice dropping to a low, lethal cadence. "This is Massimo Lombardi. I am holding the physical evidence of grand larceny, physical assault, and possession of stolen heirloom property valued in excess of fourteen million dollars. I expect the arrest warrant for Vanessa Hale to be executed within the hour."
The Commissioner did not hesitate. "The warrants are signed, Mr. Lombardi. Tactical units are already moving on her SoHo loft."
