Chapter 9 - The Wrath of the Don

Back at the Moretti estate, Alessandro sat in his study, signing international shipping manifests.

Suddenly, the red emergency beacon on his desk began to flash violently, accompanied by an ear-splitting, high-pitched alarm that echoed through the entire house.

Alessandro froze.

He grabbed his private satellite comm-unit. "Leo! Report!"

Nothing came through the speaker except static and the faint, unmistakable sound of heavy gunfire over a speaker.

Alessandro’s face turned into an unholy mask of death.

He stood up so fast his heavy walnut chair splintered against the bookshelf behind him. He reached under his desk, pulling out a master control remote, pressing a red toggle switch.

Throughout the estate, sirens blared.

Within thirty seconds, twenty-five elite Moretti soldiers, dressed in tactical gear and armed with assault rifles, poured into the courtyard where three heavy armored Escalades were already idling.

Alessandro walked out the front doors, drawing two heavy custom handguns, his eyes burning with a terrifying, demonic fury that scared even his most hardened captains.

"Where are they?!" Alessandro roared.

"Old River Road! Mile marker four!" a tactical lieutenant yelled, jumping into the lead SUV. "Signal lost thirty seconds ago!"

"Move!" Alessandro screamed, jumping into the front seat of the lead vehicle. "If my family is touched, I will burn this entire county to ash!"

The convoy screeched down the driveway, tearing through the iron gates at eighty miles per hour, their sirens wailing into the morning fog.

On Old River Road, the fire fight was brutal.

Leo had been struck in the shoulder by shrapnel, but he remained crouched behind the door of the Range Rover, firing methodically into the mist, taking down two of Marco's gunmen.

"Out of the car!" Marco barked, stepping up to the rear passenger door of the Range Rover and kicking the dented frame open.

He reached inside, grabbing Rosa by her wool coat collar, dragging her out into the cold rain.

"Get your hands off me!" Rosa shrieked, kicking wildly, her knuckles driving hard into Marco's scarred jaw.

Marco grunted in pain, stumbling back, then raised his hand and struck Rosa across the face with the butt of his pistol.

Rosa fell into the wet mud, blood trickling from her lip, but she immediately scrambled back toward the car door, reaching for Lily. "LILY!"

Marco reached into the back seat, grabbing five-year-old Lily by her yellow raincoat, tearing her from her car seat.

"MAMA!" Lily sobbed hysterically, flailing her tiny arms, kicking her boots against Marco's chest. "MAMA! HELP ME!"

"Shut up, you little brat!" Marco snarled, dragging the child toward a waiting van.

Suddenly, the roaring thunder of five V8 engines echoed through the fog.

Before Marco's men could even turn their weapons toward the road, the lead black Escalade crashed through the burning wreckage of the logging truck at full speed, smashing straight into two mercenaries, crushing them instantly against the stone embankment.

The doors of the Escalades flew open.

Alessandro stepped out into the smoke.

He didn't take cover. He didn't duck.

He walked through a hail of bullets like a phantom, his twin handguns barking with absolute, horrifying precision.

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!

Four of Marco's gunmen dropped instantly, shot through the chest before they could pull their triggers.

When Marco saw Alessandro emerging from the smoke—his face twisted in a look of ultimate, merciless retribution—pure, unadulterated terror seized his chest. He dropped Lily into the mud and raised his rifle—

Alessandro was already there.

In one fluid, terrifying movement, Alessandro grabbed the barrel of Marco's rifle, twisting it out of his hands with such violence that Marco's wrist snapped with a loud CRACK.

Before Marco could scream, Alessandro grabbed him by the throat, driving his massive frame backward into the side of the overturned truck, pinning him three feet off the ground.

The remaining mercenaries threw their weapons into the dirt, raising their hands in total surrender as thirty Moretti soldiers surrounded them with rifles raised.

"Alessandro..." Marco choked out, blood pouring from his nose, his eyes bulging as Alessandro’s fingers crushed his windpipe. "Please..."

Alessandro leaned in close, his voice dropping into a dark, terrifying whisper that chilled Marco's very soul.

"I told your Boss six months ago," Alessandro whispered softly. "I told him what happens to men who touch my family."

THWACK.

Alessandro drove his heavy handgun barrel into Marco's temple, knocking the man instantly into pitch-black darkness.

He let the unconscious man drop like a sack of trash into the mud.

Alessandro turned around.

Rosa was sitting in the rain, holding Lily tightly against her chest, both of them sobbing hysterically, wrapped in each other's arms.

The dark killer vanished from Alessandro's eyes in an instant.

He dropped his weapons into the dirt, dropped to his knees in the cold mud, and wrapped his massive arms around his wife and daughter, pulling them both against his chest so tightly that no air could pass between them.

"I'm here," Alessandro rasped out, his voice cracking with tears as he kissed Rosa's bloody lip, then kissed Lily's wet forehead a hundred times. "I'm here, my sweethearts. Daddy’s here. You're safe."

Lily buried her small face into the crook of his neck, her tiny hands clutching his wet shirt. "Daddy... the bad man took Bun..."

Alessandro looked over into the mud.

The small stuffed rabbit lay three feet away, covered in wet dirt.

May you like

Alessandro reached out, picked up the muddy rabbit, and gently tucked it back into Lily’s arms.

"I got him, baby," Alessandro whispered, resting his forehead against Rosa's, feeling her heart beating rapidly against his own. "I got everything."
