Chapter 5 - The Heir of the Hudson

The rain had stopped by seven o'clock that evening.

A brilliant amber sunset broke through the receding storm clouds, turning the waters of the Hudson River into a sheet of liquid gold.

In the master suite on the top floor of the estate, Rosa stood near the balcony doors, watching two black SUVs speed down the long gravel driveway, through the massive iron gates, and disappear onto the main highway toward Manhattan.

The Romanos were gone.

The heavy suite doors opened quietly.

Alessandro walked into the room. He looked exhausted, the lines near his eyes deeper than before, but the heavy, dark burden he had carried for four years seemed to have finally lifted from his shoulders.

Lily was sitting on a massive velvet ottoman in the center of the room, eating a slice of peach from a small silver bowl. When she saw Alessandro, her big dark eyes lit up.

"Gold button man!" she chirped happily, holding up a peach slice. "Eat?"

Alessandro let out a short, soft laugh—a sound Rosa had never heard him make in four years. He walked over, knelt in front of his daughter, and gently took the small piece of fruit, placing it in his mouth.

"Thank you, Lily," Alessandro said softly, his dark eyes shining with warmth. "It's delicious."

Rosa walked over from the balcony, her hands clasped tightly in front of her dress. "They are really gone?"

Alessandro stood up, turning to face her. "Vincent and Isabella are on a private jet back to Chicago. They will never return to New York."

Rosa took a deep, shuddering breath, her eyes searching his face. "And your lieutenants? The other families?"

"I met with my council an hour ago," Alessandro said, stepping closer to her. "They know Lily is my blood. They know she is the sole heir to the Moretti family. Leo has already doubled the perimeter security, and tomorrow morning, the family lawyers will draw up the formal trust documents."

Rosa looked down at the floor, a quiet fear still lingering in her heart. "Alessandro... I am still just Rosa. I don't know how to be the mother of a Moretti heir. I know how to clean floors, fold sheets, and stay quiet."

Alessandro reached out, taking both of her rough, calloused hands in his. He lifted them gently, pressing a long, reverent kiss against her knuckles—the same hands that had cleaned his wounds in a dark cellar four years ago.

"You were never just a maid, Rosa," Alessandro said, his voice thick with raw emotion. "You are the woman who saved my life when my own captains abandoned me. You are the woman who raised my daughter with love, dignity, and courage in the middle of a war zone."

He pulled her closer, his arms wrapping around her waist, bringing her body flush against his chest.

Rosa looked up into his dark eyes, her breath catching in her throat as she felt the powerful, steady beat of his heart against her palm.

"I spent four years looking at you in the hallways," Alessandro whispered, his dark eyes burning with an undeniable, fierce devotion. "Every morning when I walked past that kitchen, I told myself I was just checking on the house. But I was checking on you. I was looking for the angel from the cellar."

"Alessandro..." Rosa breathed, tears filling her eyes once more—not tears of fear, but of an overwhelming, long-delayed hope.

"Stay with me, Rosa," Alessandro murmured, leaning down until his lips were resting against hers. "Not as a servant. Not in the shadows. Stay with me as my wife. Help me rule this house, and let us raise our daughter together."

Lily let out a happy squeak from the ottoman, dropping her silver bowl onto the rug and scrambling over to throw her tiny arms around both of their legs, her soft giggles echoing through the warm, golden light of the room.

Alessandro looked down at his daughter, then back at Rosa, pulling them both into a tight, fierce embrace.

The dark gates of the Moretti estate stood strong against the night, but inside, the shadows were finally gone.
