Chapter 6 - The Maiden’s Coronation

Six months later.
The spring sun had brought the twelve acres of the Moretti estate into full, vibrant bloom. White roses and deep red peonies lined the cobblestone pathways leading down to the private marble chapel at the edge of the Hudson River bluff.
It was a clear, crisp Saturday morning.
Inside the chapel, the high arched windows let in beams of brilliant sunlight that danced across rows of polished mahogany pews.
Seated in those pews were the heads of the five New York families, senior lieutenants, local politicians, and high-ranking shipping magnates from across the East Coast. Every powerful figure who mattered in the state of New York was in attendance, dressed in dark, sharp suits, sitting in respectful silence.
At the front of the altar stood Don Alessandro Moretti.
He wore an exquisite black silk tuxedo, his hair trimmed, the silver at his temples shining proudly in the light. Beside him stood Leo as his best man, looking sharp and vigilant, his eyes occasionally scanning the congregation out of habit.
The pipe organ began to play a soft, triumphant hymn.
The heavy oak doors of the chapel swung open.
Rosa stepped onto the white aisle runner.
The room let out a collective, audible gasp.
She took everyone's breath away.
Gone was the tired maid in the faded blue apron with her hair pulled back tightly. Rosa walked down the aisle in a custom ivory lace gown that draped over her graceful figure, carrying a bouquet of white orchids. Her dark hair fell in soft, elegant curls over her shoulders, pinned with a delicate diamond tiara that had once belonged to Alessandro’s mother, Elena. She carried herself not with arrogance, but with a quiet, regal dignity that commanded instant respect from every Don in the room.
Walking down the aisle directly in front of her, dressed in a miniature matching white dress with a basket of rose petals, was four-year-old Lily.
Lily threw rose petals left and right with enthusiastic precision, her duck socks replaced by polished white leather shoes. As she reached the altar, she looked up at Alessandro and gave him a massive, gap-toothed grin.
Alessandro smiled down at his daughter, then raised his eyes to meet Rosa’s.
His heart hammered in his chest with a fierce, overwhelming joy he had never believed he was allowed to feel.
When Rosa reached the altar, Alessandro stepped forward, taking her hand gently in his. His thumb stroked her warm knuckles as they turned together to face the cardinal.
"We are gathered here today in the sight of God and these witnesses," the cardinal began, his deep voice echoing through the sacred space, "to unite this man, Alessandro, and this woman, Rosa, in the holy bond of matrimony..."
As the ceremony proceeded, Alessandro looked out at his captains sitting in the front pews. There was no hesitation in their eyes. There was no resentment. In their eyes, Don Moretti had not just chosen a wife; he had chosen a queen who had proven her loyalty in blood and silence long before she ever wore a ring.
"Do you, Alessandro Eduardo Moretti," the cardinal asked, "take Rosa to be your wedded wife, to love, honor, and protect, in sickness and in health, so long as you both shall live?"
Alessandro looked deep into Rosa’s dark, beautiful eyes.
"I do," Alessandro said, his voice ringing through the chapel with absolute, unyielding authority.
"And do you, Rosa Mendes," the cardinal continued, "take Alessandro to be your wedded husband?"
Rosa smiled through her tears, her fingers tightening around his. "I do."
"By the power vested in me," the cardinal declared, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. What God has joined together, let no man put asunder."
Alessandro didn't wait. He stepped forward, pulling Rosa into his arms, and kissed her deeply, reverently, as the entire chapel erupted into thunderous applause, cheers, and standing ovations from the most dangerous men in the state.
Lily clapped her hands frantically, jumping up and down in her white dress. "Yay! Mommy and Daddy!"

Alessandro pulled away from the kiss, laughing as he reached down and scooped Lily up into his left arm while holding Rosa tightly against his right side with his hand.
Together, the Moretti family turned to face their empire.
