Chapter 7 - Silver Spoons and Hidden Bruises: Matteo's Miracle and the Mockery of High Society

Within forty-eight hours, Leah’s world spun completely off its axis.
Dr. Harrison—one of the top pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons in the nation—personally arrived at the Obsidian Tower with a specialized medical team. After an exhaustive three-hour examination of Matteo, he walked out into the private study where Julian and Leah waited.
"It's a rare congenital defect, Ms. Moreno," Dr. Harrison said, adjusting his glasses. "Left untreated, his heart would have failed within six months."
Leah’s knees went weak, and she swayed. Julian’s hand instantly caught her elbow, firm and steadying.
"Can you fix it?" Julian asked without hesitation.
"Yes. With a specialized corrective procedure. The Vance Medical Foundation has already funded the entire operating suite. We can operate this Friday."
Tears streamed down Leah’s face. For two agonizing years, she had skipped meals, worked eighty-hour weeks, and begged insurance clerks on the phone, only to be rejected over and over. Now, with a single nod from Julian Vance, her nephew had been saved.
"Thank you," she sobbed openly, burying her face in her hands. "Thank you so much..."
Julian didn't say a word. He simply pulled her against his chest, wrapping his strong arms around her trembling shoulders, letting her weep into his tailored shirt. For a man who dealt in brutality, his touch was impossibly tender.
However, the safety of the tower could not block out the whispering vipers of Julian's circle.
That afternoon, a high-end luxury stylist team arrived with racks of designer clothes ordered by Julian. Leading them was Victoria Sterling—a wealthy socialite and the sister of one of Julian’s allied shipping magnates.
Victoria looked around the opulent penthouse, then sneered as Leah walked out of the dressing room wearing an oversized sweat suit.
"Is this the stray Julian dragged in from the gutters?" Victoria murmured to her assistant, loud enough for Leah to hear. "I thought she was the new cleaning staff. Look at those hips... she looks like she bakes bread for a living, not walks a red carpet."
Leah froze, the old, familiar sting of humiliation burning her cheeks.
"I may work for a living, Miss Sterling," Leah replied with quiet dignity, "but at least I don't need five pounds of makeup to disguise an ugly soul."
Victoria gasped, her face turning crimson. "How dare you speak to me like that! Do you know who my family is?!"
"She doesn't care," a deep, chilling voice echoed across the marble foyer.
Julian Vance stepped into the room, his aura radiating lethal frost. The entire styling team stopped moving, the air instantly turning frigid.
"Julian, darling!" Victoria tried to recover, putting on a sweet smile. "I was just trying to help your... guest understand our world."

Julian walked straight past Victoria as if she were made of glass. He stood in front of Leah, lifting her chin with his leather-gloved thumb.
"She doesn't need to understand your world, Victoria," Julian said, loud enough for every person in the room to hear. "Because by tomorrow night, she will own it."
