Chapter 14 - Morning After the Storm: Broken Bandages and a Heart Laid Completely Bare

Twelve hours later, the sun finally broke through the clouds, flooding the recovery room at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital with brilliant, golden warmth.
The surgery had been an absolute triumph.
Dr. Harrison walked out with a broad smile, delivering the news that Matteo’s heart defect had been completely repaired. The boy was resting peacefully in the private VIP suite, his breathing deep, steady, and healthy for the first time in his life. The little red wooden train sat proudly on his bedside table.
Outside the room, sitting on the private terrace overlooking Central Park, Leah sat wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket, watching the morning light.
The terrace door opened, and Julian walked out. His wounds had been stitched and bandaged beneath a pristine white dress shirt. He held two cups of warm tea.
He sat beside her, handing her a cup.
"How are you feeling?" he asked softly.
"Like I'm waking up from a dream," Leah smiled faintly, looking down at the green park below. "Two days ago, I was crying over a broken heel and a thirteen-dollar tip. I was invisible, Julian. People looked right through me or laughed at me."
Julian set his cup down, turning to face her fully. He reached out, gently taking her hands into his own.
"The people who laughed at you were blind fools," Julian said, his voice rich with sincere devotion. "You walked into the dark to save a dying man. You threw yourself in front of bullets to save your nephew. You have more courage, more beauty, and more grace than anyone I have ever met in my entire life."
Leah’s heart fluttered wildly, a deep flush rising on her cheeks. "Julian... we come from two completely different worlds. You are an underworld king. I'm just a girl from the east side."
"Then let me leave that world behind," Julian said without a second of hesitation. "I have already transferred the Vance assets into legitimate global foundations. I am stepping down, Leah. Because power means nothing if I don't have someone to share it with."
Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.
He opened it to reveal a magnificent, custom-cut radiant diamond ring, encircled by two emerald stones representing her and Matteo.
"Stay with me, Leah," Julian whispered, his sea-green eyes bared with complete vulnerability. "Be my queen. Let me be the father Matteo deserves, and the man who loves you for the rest of your days."
Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled down Leah’s cheeks. She threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder.

"Yes," she laughed through her tears. "Yes, Julian! A thousand times yes!"
Julian pulled her tight against his heart, pressing his lips to hers in a passionate, breathless kiss that sealed their new life forever.
