Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Penthouse

The penthouse occupied the top three floors of the Beacon Hill Tower, a private, ultra-luxury high-rise overlooking the Boston Common.

To enter, one required biometric scans in a private subterranean garage, an armed escort in an elevator that required an encrypted keycard, and passage through double steel-reinforced doors guarded by men with concealed submachine guns.

To Chloe, it was a magical castle in the clouds.

She ran across the vast living room, her eyes wide as she pressed her small hands against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows that showcased the entire glittering city skyline. The apartment was a masterpiece of minimalist luxury—hardwood floors of dark polished ebony, Italian leather furniture, marble fireplaces, and modern art pieces worth more than every paycheck I would ever earn in ten lifetimes.

"Look, Mommy!" Chloe squealed, pointing down at the tiny cars crawling along the street below. "The cars look like little beetles!"

"I see them, sweetie," I murmured, standing near the entrance with our two battered duffel bags clutched in my hands. I felt completely out of place. My faded jeans and oversized thrifted sweater seemed like an insult to the pristine elegance around us.

A woman in a crisp black housekeeper’s uniform approached us with a warm, respectful smile. "Good afternoon, Miss Hayes. My name is Teresa. Mr. Salvatore instructed me to show you and little Chloe to your suite. If you need anything at all—meals, clothing, medicine—you have only to press the intercom."

"Thank you, Teresa," I managed to say.

Our suite was larger than our entire old apartment. It featured a king-sized bed with Egyptian cotton sheets, a massive walk-in closet already stocked with brand-new designer clothing in our exact sizes, and an en-suite bathroom with a heated marble soaking tub. A basket of fresh fruit, artisan pastries, and Chloe's favorite apple juice sat on the coffee table.

While Chloe happily explored her new room—marveling at a plush oversized teddy bear waiting on her bed—I walked back out into the main corridor, determined to find Dominic.

I found him in his private study at the end of the hall.

The heavy mahogany doors were slightly ajar. I stopped just outside, hearing low, tense voices speaking inside.

"...we traced the detonator frequency to a warehouse in East Boston," a man's voice was saying. It sounded like Marco, Dominic's second-in-command, a sharp-featured man with slicked-back hair whom I had seen briefly in the garage. "It’s definitely the Rossi syndicate, Boss. Don Rossi is getting desperate. His port shipments are drying up, and he knows that if he doesn't eliminate you before the winter summit, his council will force him out."

"Let him be desperate," Dominic’s voice replied, chilled and completely devoid of emotion. "Desperate men make reckless mistakes. What about the leak inside our organization?"

"Still looking," Marco said smoothly. "No unusual bank transfers among the captains. But whoever tipped them off about your route that night knew the security convoy schedule."

"Find them, Marco," Dominic said, a lethal edge cutting through his tone. "And when you do, bring them to the basement in the docks. Do not kill them until I arrive."

"Understood, Boss."

Footsteps approached the door. I panicked, taking two quick steps backward just as Marco pushed the door open.

Marco stopped when he saw me. His eyes swept over me with a cold, calculating intensity that made my skin crawl. There was no respect in his expression—only hidden disdain masked behind a polite veneer.

"Miss Hayes," Marco said, dipping his head slightly. "Enjoying the accommodations?"

"It’s very nice, thank you," I said stiffly.

Marco offered a thin, unsettling smile and walked past me down the hall. I watched him leave, an instinctive knot forming in the pit of my stomach. There was something about the way he held himself, something about his eyes, that made my internal alarm bells ring.

"Eavesdropping is a dangerous habit, Emma."

I turned back toward the study. Dominic was standing behind his massive glass desk, removing his suit jacket and draping it over a leather chair. He had rolled up the sleeves of his white dress shirt, revealing corded forearms marked by faint, jagged scars.

"I wasn't eavesdropping," I said, stepping into the room. "I was looking for you."

"You found me," he said, pouring two fingers of amber scotch into a crystal tumbler. He held the bottle up in an unspoken question.

"No, thank you," I said. "I wanted to talk about... boundaries."

Dominic raised an eyebrow, taking a slow sip of his drink. "Boundaries?"

"I am grateful for what you are doing for Chloe," I began, my voice steady despite the flutter in my chest. "I really am. But I am not a prisoner here, and I am not your pet project. I have a job at Rosie’s. I have a life. You cannot just lock us away in a golden cage and expect me to sit quietly while you fight a gang war."

Dominic set his glass down on the desk with a soft click. He walked around the perimeter of the desk, closing the distance between us until he stood just inches away. His presence was overwhelming, carrying the subtle scent of expensive sandalwood and cedarwood.

"Rosie’s Diner has been closed for the next two weeks for 'renovations,'" he murmured, looking down into my eyes. "I paid Rosie fifty thousand dollars to compensate for the lost business and gave her entire staff a paid vacation."

My jaw dropped. "You did what?"

"You cannot go to work, Emma," he said softly, his dark eyes intense. "Because the men who put me in that burning car are hunting the person who pulled me out. If you step outside this building without my security team, they will kidnap you. They will torture you to get to me. And they will not hesitate to use Chloe as leverage."

His words hit me like a splash of freezing water. The gravity of the situation crashed down upon me. This wasn't a game. This wasn't just a wealthy man being generous. We were caught directly in the crosshairs of a ruthless criminal empire.

"Why are you doing this?" I whispered, my voice trembling slightly. "You could have just written me a check for Chloe's surgery and sent us to another state. Why keep us here? Why put yourself in danger to protect us?"

Dominic reached out, his long fingers hesitating for a fraction of a second before gently brushing a stray strand of hair behind my ear. His touch was warm, electric, sending a sudden shiver running down my spine.

"Because for the last ten years, every person in my life has wanted something from me," he whispered, his obsidian eyes softening with a rare, vulnerable sincerity. "They wanted my money, my influence, my blood, or my death. You saw a dying man in a fire, and you ran toward the flames instead of away from them. You didn't want anything."

May you like

He leaned in slightly, his breath warm against my cheek.

"I keep what is precious to me safe, Emma Hayes. And whether you like it or not... you are now under my care."
