Chapter 12 - Chloe’s Surgery Under Siege

For four agonizing hours, I sat in the private waiting area outside Operating Room 3.
Outside the hospital, the city was completely locked down. Salvatore enforcers formed an impenetrable perimeter around the entire medical complex, ensuring not a single unauthorized vehicle or individual could approach within four blocks.
Dominic, patched and stitched with heavy compression bandages beneath a fresh black shirt, sat beside me the entire time. He refused to lie down in a recovery room. His hand remained wrapped around mine, giving me strength every time my anxiety threatened to pull me under.
"She is strong, Emma," Dominic murmured softly, his thumb caressing the back of my hand. "She has your blood. She will make it through."
"I was so alone for so long, Dominic," I confessed, resting my head against his uninjured shoulder. "Every day was a battle just to buy food, just to keep the lights on. I was so terrified that my poverty would kill my daughter."
Dominic wrapped his arm around me, pulling me gently against his side. "You will never be alone again, Emma. Neither of you. From this day forward, everything I have belongs to you."
At 10:15 a.m., the red light above the operating theater switched to green.
Dr. Vance stepped out through the swinging doors, pulling off his surgical mask. A wide, exhausted smile spread across his face.
"The defect is completely closed," Dr. Vance announced. "The pulmonary pressure normalized immediately. The surgery was an absolute, flawless success. Chloe is in recovery, breathing 100% on her own."
A sound that was half-laugh, half-sob tore from my throat. I collapsed into Dominic's arms, weeping tears of pure, unadulterated relief and joy.

Dominic held me tightly, his eyes closing as he whispered a silent prayer of gratitude against my hair.
"Thank you, Doctor," Dominic said, his voice thick with emotion. "You have the eternal gratitude of the Salvatore family."
