Chapter 4 - The Midnight Convoy into Livingston County

At exactly 1:45 AM, the quiet, fog-drenched rural roads leading into Livingston County were pierced by the low, synchronized rumble of heavy turbo-diesel V8 engines.
Four matte-black Chevrolet Suburbans, outfitted with military-grade satellite communication domes, run-flat armored tires, and tinted ballistic glass, rolled through the town limits in a tight tactical formation.
The convoy bypassed the local sheriff’s patrols, turning directly onto the private tarmac of the Livingston Municipal Airfield.
I was waiting in the darkened hangar, leaning against my old pickup truck.
The lead Suburban came to a smooth halt on the concrete apron. The doors flew open, and three figures stepped out into the damp night air.
First was Jax Vance—six-foot-four, built like an armored tank, a former Delta Force master breacher with twenty years of combat deployments under his belt.
Second was Elena Rostov—Task Force Ghost’s master cyber-warfare specialist, carrying a military-grade encrypted server briefcase that could crack foreign intelligence databases in seconds.
Third was Colonel Raymond Vance—a towering, razor-sharp senior trial attorney from the Department of Justice Special Prosecutions Division, wearing a tailored charcoal overcoat over a dark suit.
Jax stopped two feet in front of me. He looked at my faded blue janitor uniform, looked at the silver in my hair, and then pulled me into a bone-crushing, brotherly bear hug.
“It’s good to see you standing, Reaper,” Jax said, his deep voice vibrating with unshakeable loyalty.
“I wish the circumstances were different, Jax,” I replied quietly.
Elena Rostov stepped up, setting her server briefcase onto the hood of my pickup. She opened the titanium latches, her fingers flying across the backlit mechanical keyboard.
“Reaper, the satellite uplink to JSOC is established,” Elena reported, her sharp green eyes glowing in the blue screen light. “General Sterling granted us Level-1 Title 50 intelligence clearance. We have complete visibility over every digital network in this county.”
Colonel Raymond Vance opened a thick leather portfolio, pulling out a sheaf of documents stamped with the gold seal of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
“Dennis,” Colonel Vance said, his tone lethal and precise. “We have emergency federal search and seizure warrants signed by Chief Judge Harrison at midnight. We have unsealed authorization to seize every server, every cruiser dashcam, every body-worn camera, and every financial ledger within the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department.”
Colonel Vance looked down at my work shirt.
“The question is, Commander: how do we execute?”
I looked at the three operators who had walked through hell with me across the world.

“We don't go in with guns blazing,” I said, my voice dropping into that icy register of absolute command. “We go in with the truth. We strip Barnes of his authority, expose his crimes to the citizens he swore to protect, and leave him with zero ground to stand on.”
Jax grinned, racking the slide of a heavy non-lethal breaching tool. “Music to my ears, Reaper. Let’s go hunting.”
