Chapter 2 - The Satellite Ring in the Dark and the Vanguard Mobilization

The secure line connected with two sharp digital clicks.
On the other end, twelve hundred miles away in an underground command bunker in northern Virginia, the phone didn't ring twice.
“Ghost Operations Protocol,” a deep, gravelly voice answered instantly. “Authenticate.”
“Vanguard-Zero-One,” I spoke into the receiver, my voice razor-sharp and cold as frozen steel. “This is Reaper. Code: Black Sky Broken.”
A five-second silence hung on the satellite connection.
Then, the sound of rapid computer keystrokes echoed through the line, followed by the heavy exhale of a man who realized an ancient giant had just awakened from the grave.
“Reaper?” General Marcus Sterling—now the Deputy Director of the Joint Special Operations Command—breathed into the speaker. “Dennis... my God. That code hasn't been broadcast in seventeen years. Where are you?”
“Livingston County, Illinois,” I said. “My seventeen-year-old son was just shot twice through both kneecaps at point-blank range by a corrupt county sheriff named Thomas Barnes. Barnes used his service weapon to intentionally cripple my boy, and the local police union is currently manufacturing a fabricated burglary report to bury the shooting.”
On the other end of the line, General Sterling’s breathing turned from professional shock into a lethal, quiet fury.
“Status of your boy?” Sterling asked.
“In emergency orthopedic surgery at Mercy General. Dr. Harold Donnelly is on the table with him.”
“Donnelly from Kandahar?”
“Yes.”
General Sterling didn't ask another question. When a commanding officer of Task Force Ghost calls in a Black Sky directive, the entire machinery of American covert power moves without hesitation.
“Who do you need, Reaper?” Sterling asked.
“I need Elena Rostov on signals intelligence and server extraction,” I stated with absolute precision. “I need Jax Vance on tactical logistics and perimeter containment. I need Colonel Raymond Vance from the Department of Justice Special Investigations Unit. And I need a Tier-1 surgical orthopedic trauma team from Walter Reed flown into Mercy General on a military transport within four hours.”
“They are already rolling,” General Sterling declared. “Jax and Elena are currently stationed at the Fort Sheridan naval facility outside Chicago. They can have four armored tactical units on the ground in Livingston County by 0200 hours. The DOJ federal civil rights warrants will clear the federal magistrate's desk in forty-five minutes.”
Sterling paused, his voice dropping into a solemn, heavy register.
“Dennis... how do you want to handle Sheriff Barnes?”
I looked through the glass doors of the surgical corridor, watching the red ‘IN USE’ light illuminate above OR 1 where my son’s bones were being pieced back together.
“I want him legal, Marcus,” I said, my voice echoing with terrifying clarity. “I want his badge stripped in front of the town he terrorized. I want his union shield broken into dust. I want his bank accounts seized, his deputies in federal zip-ties, and I want him to spend the next forty years in a federal penitentiary watching the ceiling of a concrete cell.”
“Consider Livingston County a federal combat theater, Reaper,” General Sterling replied. “We will see you at dawn.”
The line clicked dead.

I slipped the satellite phone back into my blue janitor's pocket, turned to Sarah, and pulled her into a warm, unbreakable embrace.
“Stay here with Harold,” I whispered into her ear. “I have to go clean up the courthouse.”
