Chapter 10 - The Federal Marshals Raid the County Headquarters

At 8:30 PM on Wednesday night, twelve unmarked black tactical vans and thirty heavily armed United States Marshals, backed by FBI SWAT, surrounded the Livingston County Sheriff’s Headquarters.

BANG.

The heavy front glass doors of the courthouse were breached with a hydraulic ram.

Special Agents in tactical armor and night-vision goggles flooded the building, securing the hallways, the dispatch center, and the administrative offices.

In the center of the lobby—right where I had pushed my mop twenty-four hours earlier—Sheriff Thomas Barnes was surrounded by eight federal agents with assault rifles drawn.

“Thomas Barnes, by order of the United States District Court, you are under arrest for Federal Civil Rights Violations, Attempted Murder, Armed Racketeering, and Narcotics Distribution Conspiracy!” the lead Marshal roared.

Barnes was shoved face-down onto the cold marble floor—the exact floor he had mocked me for cleaning.

CLICK. CLICK.

Heavy steel federal handcuffs were clicked tightly behind his back.

As the agents hauled Barnes to his feet, dozens of news cameras that had been alerted by the DOJ broadcast his capture live to millions of viewers across the nation.

Thomas Barnes—the man who thought he was a king, the cop who thought a badge made him immune to justice—was led out of his own courthouse in chains, sobbing and shielding his face from the blinding flashbulbs of the press.
