Chapter 8 - The Shadow Behind Julian

While federal agents processed the crime scene at the Swiss Banking House, Marco and I escorted Emily back to the private Upper East Side penthouse.

As the elevator opened directly into the marble foyer, a small streak of fuchsia and cream came flying across the room.

“Mommy!”

Lily threw her arms around Emily’s waist, burying her face in her mother’s coat.

Emily dropped to her knees, embracing her daughter with a fierce, protective tenderness that brought a heavy silence over the entire room. “I’m here, baby. I’m right here.”

Lily looked up, her sharp hazel eyes scanning her mother’s face before looking over at me. “Did you find the letters, Mr. Dominic?”

I walked over, crouching down beside them, offering the little girl a gentle smile. “We found the letters, Lily. And we found something even bigger. Because of you, your mother is about to take her rightful place running this entire company.”

Lily tilted her head, her mismatched boots having been replaced by a pair of warm, plush rabbit slippers. “Does that mean Mommy doesn't have to cry when the mail comes?”

“No one will ever make your mother cry again,” I promised her. “I give you my personal word as a Moretti.”

Later that evening, after Lily had fallen asleep in the master guest suite, Emily, Marco, and I sat around the mahogany dining table surrounded by stacks of financial records, corporate bylaws, and the authenticated St. Jude trust deeds.

The penthouse doors opened, and Marcus, the head of my executive security detail, walked in, placing an encrypted USB flash drive on the table.

“Mr. Moretti,” Marcus reported, his jaw set grimly. “The lead operative from the bank assault flipped thirty minutes into his federal interrogation. The tactical team was contracted through an offshore shell corporation based in the Cayman Islands.”

“Who funded the account?” Marco asked, leaning forward.

“Evelyn Vance,” Marcus replied. “Direct wire transfer from her personal private trust two days ago. But that’s not all. We intercepted an emergency conference call between Evelyn and Julian that took place less than an hour ago.”

Marcus tapped the flash drive, connecting it to my laptop. The audio recording began to play through the room’s speakers.

“You idiot!” Evelyn’s cold, aristocratic voice hissed through the speaker, venom dripping from every syllable. “I told you to eliminate the girl’s digital footprint quietly! Why did you use Dominic’s signature? Why did you draw his attention to the sub-basement archives?”

“I had to move fast, Mother!” Julian’s panicked voice responded over the wire. “The twenty-year statutory deadline expires this Friday at midnight! If she remained on the payroll as an active employee, the automated trust software would have triggered an executive notification to Dominic’s dashboard! I had to sever her employment so she would be legally classified as a non-affiliated entity!”

“Well, now Dominic has the Swiss charters,” Evelyn snapped back. “The bank breach failed. The feds are sniffing around the shell company. Tomorrow morning at the shareholder summit, we don't play defense. We activate the contingency protocols. We claim the Swiss documents are forgeries manufactured by Dominic to prevent the board from auditing his personal maritime investments. We force a vote to strip him of the chairmanship before he can authenticate the shares!”

“And if that doesn't work?” Julian asked, his voice trembling with fear.

“Then neither Dominic nor Emily Carter will make it to the podium alive,” Evelyn said, the call abruptly ending with a chilling click.

Emily sat motionless, her face pale in the ambient light of the penthouse. “She’s insane. She’s willing to destroy everything your father built just to keep those shares.”

I closed the laptop with a definitive snap.

“Evelyn built her entire life on the assumption that fear and money can defeat truth,” I said, looking Emily directly in the eyes. “Tomorrow morning, we are going to show her that some legacies cannot be bought, forged, or stolen.”
