Chapter 7 - A Mother’s Sacrifice

“Down! Stay behind the vault door!” I shouted, pulling Emily back into the reinforced steel alcove of Compartment #0084.

Marco immediately drew a concealed 9mm sidearm from his inner coat holster, taking a defensive position beside the reinforced vault archway. Monsieur Laurent hit the manual emergency lockdown button on the wall, but the heavy hydraulic security grates only descended halfway before screeching to a halt—the building’s primary power grid had been sabotaged with military-grade precision.

“They aren't here for the bank’s cash,” Marco shouted over the wailing klaxons. “They tracked us from the Plaza! Julian and Evelyn know we found the original charters!”

Heavy, tactical boots echoed down the concrete spiral staircase. Flashlights cut through the emergency amber darkness of the subterranean hallway.

“Moretti!” a harsh, distorted voice barked through a megaphone from the corridor. “Slide the leather portfolio out into the hall and step out with your hands up! You have thirty seconds before we deploy tear gas into the vault corridor!”

Emily was trembling, but her eyes weren't filled with panic—they were filled with a fierce, primal fire. She gripped my arm tightly.

“Dominic, the portfolio,” she whispered urgently. “There is an emergency document burn chute behind the secondary safety deposit rack. My mother told me about it! If they take the original charters, we have nothing!”

“They aren't taking anything, Emily,” I said, pulling my own sidearm from my shoulder holster. “Marco, how many men did we leave on the street level?”

“Four elite tactical contractors,” Marco replied, his eyes locked on the entranceway. “If they were breached, they’ve already signaled the NYPD Strategic Response Group. We just need to hold this choke point for four minutes.”

The first flashbang grenade bounced into the corridor outside the vault.

BANG!

A blinding flash of white light and a concussive shockwave ripped through the air, shaking dust from the concrete ceiling. Two men in unmarked black tactical uniforms and ballistic masks rounded the corner, their submachine guns raised.

Marco fired three controlled rounds, forcing the first operative to dive behind a granite pillar. I leaned out from the vault frame, firing twice at the second attacker, striking him squarely in the tactical vest and driving him back down the corridor.

“Fall back! Secondary breach!” the lead mercenary screamed into his comms.

Above us, the muffled sound of heavy automatic gunfire and tactical sirens began to reverberate through the floorboards. The NYPD tactical teams and my secondary security convoy had arrived, hitting the mercenary assault team from the rear at the street entrance.

Within ninety seconds, the gunfire on the upper level ceased, replaced by the unmistakable, authoritative shouts of federal and city tactical units clearing the building.

“NYPD Emergency Service Unit! Cease fire! The building is secured!”

Marco let out a long, ragged exhale, lowering his weapon.

I turned to Emily. Her hands were covered in plaster dust, her coat slightly disheveled, but she stood tall, holding the St. Jude portfolio firmly against her chest.

“Are you hurt?” I asked, checking her over.

“I’m fine,” she said, her voice remarkably steady. “My mother survived seventeen years of their threats. I’m not going to break down over a few men with guns.”

Monsieur Laurent emerged from behind his desk, trembling as he wiped his brow with a silk handkerchief. “Mon Dieu... Mr. Moretti, this is unprecedented in the two-hundred-year history of our institution!”

“The men who orchestrated this will spend the rest of their lives in a federal penitentiary, Monsieur Laurent,” I said coldly. “Marco, contact the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. I want federal arrest warrants drafted for Julian Vance and Evelyn Vance before the market opens tomorrow morning.”

“What about the shareholder meeting on Friday?” Emily asked, looking up at me.

“We don't wait for Friday,” I declared, my eyes burning with fierce determination. “We call an Emergency Shareholder Summit for tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM. We finish this now.”
