Chapter 27 - The Ghost in the Ashes

The wreckage of the helicopter burned on a desolate barrier island off the coast of Fire Island. Dante’s private fleet of patrol boats arrived at the crash site within forty minutes, cordoning off the area before the Coast Guard or local authorities could even receive the emergency transponder signal.

Dante stepped onto the smoking sands, his boots crunching over charred metal and burning aviation fuel. Mateo, his shoulder bandaged tightly, walked beside him with a flashlight.

“Boss, the recovery team searched the main fuselage,” Mateo reported. “Two pilots and three mercenaries dead at the scene. But...”

“Vance wasn’t on the flight,” Dante finished the thought, his jaw clenched.

Mateo looked surprised. “How did you know?”

“Because men like Julian Vance don’t board helicopters with bombs,” Dante said, stooping down to pick up a twisted piece of scorched metal from the sand. It was the remains of a gold pocket watch. “The man on the balcony was a double. High-grade latex prosthetic or a decoy soldier trained to mimic his posture. Julian is far too arrogant to risk his own skin on American soil.”

“So where is the real Architect?”

“He’s where all the spiders hide when they want to spin a web,” Dante answered, looking west toward the glowing Manhattan skyline. “The Financial District. The Vance Family controls the transatlantic shipping consortium through an offshore trust operating out of the Wall Street Plaza. He thought the explosion would distract me, give him time to freeze our accounts and flee back to Rome.”

Dante threw the broken pocket watch into the cold surf.

“Get the cars ready,” Dante commanded. “We’re not waiting for them to freeze our assets. We are going to bleed them dry at their own temple.”

Back at the estate, Maria was gently rocking Elena to sleep in the fortified library. The child had refused to sleep anywhere else, insisting on staying near the “bronze bird.”

When Dante entered, the toddler opened her sleepy eyes.

“Uncle Dante?” she whispered, using the word for the first time.

The word hit Dante like a sledgehammer against his ribs. Uncle.

For ten years, Dante had lived only as Don Moretti—a machine of power, vengeance, and cold calculation. But looking at the child who carried his brother Leo’s blood, he felt the heavy mantle of family reclaim his soul.

He sat on the edge of the sofa, leaning down to kiss her forehead. “Go to sleep, Elena. Your uncle has business in town.”

“The bad bird is in the big glass house,” Elena mumbled groggily, her tiny fingers curling around his thumb. “He has a red tie.”

Dante paused. He looked at Maria. “Did anyone show her a picture of the Vance boardroom?”

“No, Don Dante!” Maria said, shaking her head frantically. “She... she just speaks things sometimes. Her mother, Sophia... she had the same gift. An intuition that bordered on terrifying.”

Dante stood tall, adjusting the cuffs of his dark shirt.

The penthouse of the Vance Trust on Wall Street was made entirely of floor-to-ceiling glass.

And the Architect was waiting for him.
