Chapter 14 - The Final Sentence of the Sinners

Six months later, the trial of Richard, Victoria, and Charles Sinclair concluded in the Atlanta federal courthouse.

Facing an overwhelming mountain of forensic evidence, wiretap recordings, and testimony from sixteen former victims and co-conspirators, the defendants entered a formal plea of guilty to all thirty-six federal counts.

The sentencing was delivered by a unanimous federal judicial panel.

Richard Sinclair was sentenced to thirty-five years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary in Florence, Colorado, with zero possibility of parole, followed by lifetime supervised release and full financial restitution of forty million dollars.

Victoria Sinclair was sentenced to twelve years in a federal facility for conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and money laundering.

Former Senator Charles Sinclair was sentenced to eighteen years for federal racketeering, political bribery, and extortion.

Former Sheriff Thomas Brody was sentenced to ten years in a federal correctional institution for civil rights violations.

As the bailiffs led Richard away in chains, he looked back at the gallery one last time.

Lily and I sat in the front row, holding hands, our heads held high. Richard’s eyes were filled with a pathetic, desperate sorrow, but we didn't look at him with hatred.

We simply looked through him, as if he were nothing more than dust on the road we had left far behind.
