Chapter 8 - The Secret Vault of the Golden Nephew

On Thursday afternoon, while Leo was resting after a physical therapy session, an unexpected email arrived in my business inbox with the subject line: “Regarding Mason Vance - You need to see this.”

I opened the message. It was from Coach Thomas Henderson, the former head coach of the county youth hockey league who had suddenly resigned two years prior.

Attached to the email was a cell phone number and a brief note: “David, I read Clara’s disgusting Facebook campaign. It’s time the truth comes out. Call me immediately.”

I dialed the number. Coach Henderson answered on the very first ring.

"David?"

"Coach Henderson, thank you for reaching out. What is this about?"

Henderson let out a heavy, weary sigh. "David, what happened to Leo wasn't an isolated incident. Mason has been terrorizing kids for years, and Clara and your father have been actively paying people off to bury the evidence."

My grip tightened on the phone. "What do you mean, paying people off?"

"Two years ago, during our regional championship tournament in New Hampshire," Henderson explained, his voice laced with lingering disgust, "Mason got into an argument with our backup goalie in the locker room over ice time. Mason deliberately swung his hockey stick and smashed the boy’s helmet, giving the kid a severe concussion and a fractured jaw."

"Jesus Christ..." I muttered, feeling sick to my stomach.

"I wanted Mason kicked out of the league and turned over to the police immediately," Henderson continued. "But your father, Arthur, stepped in. He used his connections with the league's board of directors, threatened to pull their municipal funding, and Clara paid the victim’s family sixty thousand dollars out of an offshore trust account to sign a non-disclosure agreement. They forced me to resign when I refused to sign a false report claiming the boy slipped on wet ice."

"Do you still have the incident logs?" I asked, my pulse pounding.

"I have the original unedited locker room security footage, the signed incident statements from two assistant coaches, and the email chain where Clara explicitly offered the payoff," Henderson said. "I kept copies of everything in a secure cloud drive in case Mason ever hurt another child. I just forwarded the entire archive to Detective Rodriguez and your attorney."

The golden boy’s fortress wasn't just cracking—it was imploding from the inside out.
