Chapter 6 - An Order of Protection

The following morning at 8:30 AM, I stood inside the high-ceilinged courtroom of the County Family and District Court.

Judge Eleanor Vance—no relation to the deputy, but renowned across the state for her no-nonsense stance on domestic violence and child endangerment—sat upon the bench, reviewing the emergency petition filed by my attorney, Mark Sterling.

Clara sat at the defense table across the aisle, flanked by two high-priced defense lawyers in tailored pinstripe suits. My parents sat in the second row of the gallery, glaring daggers into the back of my neck.

"Your Honor," Clara’s lead counsel, Arthur Pendelton, stood up, clearing his throat smoothly. "This entire matter is an unfortunate, exaggerated domestic dispute arising from standard sibling rivalry between cousins. Mr. David Vance is attempting to weaponize an accidental playground injury to settle long-standing familial grievances. We ask that this frivolous application for an emergency protective order be dismissed immediately."

Judge Vance lowered her reading glasses and stared at Pendelton with an expression of pure, unadulterated disdain.

"Mr. Pendelton," Judge Vance said, her voice echoing off the mahogany paneling. "I have reviewed the certified medical intake records from St. Jude’s Pediatric Trauma Unit. An eight-year-old boy suffered two fractured ribs, a contused lung, and significant hemothorax requiring high-dependency pediatric intervention."

She picked up a second document. "Furthermore, I have personally listened to the verified 911 dispatch audio recording captured via the child's smartwatch."

The defense attorney shifted uncomfortably on his feet.

"The recording," Judge Vance continued, her tone sharpening to a razor edge, "clearly captures the respondents physically confiscating a cellular device, actively obstructing emergency medical care, and verbally intimidating the father while an infant lay gasping in critical respiratory distress."

Clara tried to stand up. "Your Honor, if I could just explain—"

GAVEL SLAM!

"Silence, Counsel’s client!" Judge Vance barked. "One more outburst from you, Ms. Clara Vance, and I will hold you in summary contempt and remand you directly to county custody!"

Judge Vance turned back to her docket and picked up her pen.

"The petition for an Emergency Permanent Protection from Abuse Order is hereby GRANTED IN FULL," the Judge declared. "Clara Vance, Mason Vance, Evelyn Vance, and Arthur Vance are ordered to remain a minimum of one thousand feet away from David Vance, Leo Vance, their residence, Leo’s elementary school, and any medical facilities they frequent."

She slammed the gavel down once more. "Furthermore, any electronic, third-party, or social media contact will constitute an immediate Class A misdemeanor violation resulting in instant revocation of pre-trial release. We are adjourned."

As I walked out of the courtroom beside Mark Sterling, Clara caught my eye from across the hallway. Her face was twisted in silent, venomous hatred.

The legal war had only just begun.
