Chapter 11 - Arraignment and the Golden Boy's Mask Slips

The County Superior Courthouse was packed to maximum capacity for the preliminary arraignment.
Reporters from three regional news stations lined the gallery benches, drawn by the high-profile scandal involving a prominent former magistrate’s family and an elite youth athlete.
Clara sat at the defense table, wearing an impeccably tailored navy suit, maintaining her practiced posture of aggrieved innocence. Beside her sat Mason, dressed in a crisp blazer, rolling his eyes in utter boredom as if the proceedings were an annoying waste of his precious weekend.
My mother and father sat behind them, looking stiff, arrogant, and untouchable.
Judge Vance called the court to order. "We are here for the preliminary hearing on the amended indictments in the matter of the State versus Clara Vance, Arthur Vance, Evelyn Vance, and juvenile respondent Mason Vance."
Prosecutor Harrison stood up. "Your Honor, the State moves to introduce newly recovered digital evidence seized pursuant to a lawful search warrant: Exhibit A, unedited 4K security video from the primary residence, and Exhibit B, historical forensic logs documenting prior suppressed assaults."
Clara’s defense attorney, Arthur Pendelton, leaped to his feet. "Your Honor, we object! We have not had sufficient time to examine this evidence!"
"Objection overruled, Mr. Pendelton," Judge Vance said coldly. "Publish the video to the courtroom monitors."
As the massive flat-screen displays illuminated with the brutal footage of Mason stomping on Leo’s ribs while laughing, a collective gasp echoed throughout the entire courtroom.
Reporters began furiously scribbling in their notebooks.
Clara’s polished facade shattered in real-time. Her hands began trembling uncontrollably.
On the screen, my mother’s voice rang out: "Boys fight! Don't you dare ruin Mason’s future!" followed by my father casually sipping his scotch while refusing to call an ambulance.
When the video finished playing, Judge Vance turned her gaze toward the defense table. Her eyes burned with righteous indignation.
Suddenly, Mason let out a loud, scoffing chuckle and muttered under his breath, "The little crybaby deserved it anyway."
The entire courtroom froze.
Judge Vance leaned forward, her gavel gripped tightly in her white-knuckled fist. "Did the juvenile respondent just speak?"
Clara frantically shoved Mason’s shoulder. "Mason, shut up!"
"No, Ms. Vance," Judge Vance roared, slamming her gavel down with an earth-shattering crack. "Your son has revealed his true character to this entire court! This is not childish roughhousing—this is dangerous, unrepentant predatory behavior!"
Judge Vance stood up, her black robes billowing.

"In light of this incontrovertible evidence, I find probable cause on all counts! Mason Vance is remanded to the State Youth Diagnostic and Secure Detention Facility without bail pending trial! Clara Vance, Arthur Vance, and Evelyn Vance—your bails are officially REVOKED due to active witness extortion and perjury! Bailiffs, take all four defendants into immediate custody!"
Clara shrieked in horror as two armed bailiffs stepped forward with silver handcuffs. Mom burst into hysterical, uncontrollable sobs, while Dad stood frozen in stunned disbelief as cold steel clicked around his wrists in the very courtroom where he once presided.
