Chapter 7

The revelation hung in the air like smoke.

Emma stared at Salvatore, her hands clenched into tight fists.

“Julian framed my mother?” Emma whispered, the pieces of her family history shattering and reforming in her mind.

“He was young, ambitious, and desperate to prove himself to our father,” Salvatore explained, tapping his cane against the floorboards. “He stole forty thousand dollars from the safe, pinned it on your mother, and threatened her with prison if she didn’t leave the city.”

Dante’s expression darkened into pure stone.

“And she ran to Albany to protect me,” Emma said, tears burning the corners of her eyes. “She spent twenty years looking over her shoulder—all because of a Vance.”

“Which is why you and Dante are going to finish this,” Salvatore declared, sliding a weathered leather ledger across the table. “Julian’s original ledger. Signed in his own handwriting.”

Dante picked up the ledger and flipped it open.

“Where did you find this?” Dante asked in shock.

“It doesn’t matter where I found it,” Salvatore dismissed with a wave of his hand. “What matters is that it contains every bank account, every bribe, and every corrupt politician on Julian’s payroll.”

Emma opened her laptop again.

“With this ledger and the account numbers, I can cross-reference the Meridian Trust firewall,” Emma realized, her eyes lighting up with determination. “We don’t need to hack his servers. We have the master encryption key right here in ink.”

She began typing furiously, inputting the master codes from Salvatore’s ledger into her terminal.

The red screen flashed green.

Files flooded the monitor by the thousands.

Bank records, offshore routing numbers, encrypted communications with federal officials on the take.

“I have it,” Emma breathed. “Every single transaction.”

Suddenly, the exterior security monitors flickered.

On screen four, three black SUVs rolled slowly down the quiet Queens street, their headlights extinguished.

“They found us,” Dante said instantly, drawing his sidearm and checking the magazine.
