Chapter 5 - Stripping the Senator of Her Golden Armor

While the Kensington empire was being incinerated in broad daylight, Senator Evelyn Sterling was preparing for what she believed would be the crowning achievement of her political career.

Inside the opulent Capitol Club dining room in the state capital, three hundred wealthy donors, lobbyists, and political allies were gathered for her annual Armed Services Committee Gala. Crystal chandeliers hung from vaulted ceilings, waiters in white tuxedos carried silver trays of vintage champagne, and a string quartet played softly in the corner.

Senator Evelyn Sterling, dressed in an emerald designer evening gown with diamond earrings worth more than a working-class mortgage, stood at the marble podium, smiling for the dozens of camera flashes from the press corps.

To her right stood her son, Brantley Sterling. Brantley, twenty-two, wore a bespoke tuxedo, his hair slicked back with pomade, holding a glass of sparkling cider and basking in the applause of his mother’s powerful benefactors.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Senator Sterling announced into the golden microphone, her voice radiating practiced charisma and unshakeable authority. "Our state has always stood for law, order, and unyielding military strength. As chair of the Armed Services Sub-Committee, I have ensured that our national defense remains impenetrable. And with the support of great patriots like Victor Holbrook, we will continue to lead this nation into an era of security!"

The room erupted into polite, enthusiastic applause. Brantley smirked, nudging his friend at the front table, whispering, "Look at these sheep. My mom can literally do whatever she wants."

At the rear of the grand ballroom, near the audio-visual control booth, stood Leo Reyes.

Leo wore the uniform of a senior network audio engineer, carrying a tactical tablet linked directly to Hayes Montgomery’s server array.

"Julian," Leo spoke quietly into his hidden collar mic. "Target Bravo is at the podium. Audience capacity is three hundred. Live television broadcast is reaching two point eight million households across the tri-state area."

“You are green to drop the curtain, Leo,” Julian’s voice replied smoothly in the earpiece. “Broadcast feed intercepted. All civilian safety overrides disabled. Light her up.”

Leo smiled, tapped the screen of his tablet, and activated the Vanguard Broadcast Override.

In an instant, the gentle classical music playing through the ballroom’s sound system cut out with a sharp, piercing screech of audio feedback.

The elegant mood lighting dimmed to complete blackness, leaving only the harsh white spotlight centered on Senator Evelyn Sterling and her son at the podium.

"What is going on?" Senator Sterling whispered, shielding her eyes from the glare. "Technician, fix the lighting immediately!"

Suddenly, the massive fifty-foot projection screen behind the podium—which had been displaying the American flag and the campaign slogan Strength, Honor, Integrity—flickered violently.

A loud, clear audio recording began playing across the entire ballroom, amplified through eighty high-powered speakers:

“Chief Higgins, this is Senator Sterling. Listen to me very carefully. My son Brantley was involved in an unfortunate incident near the chemistry lab tonight. Some scholarship girl tried to provoke him. You will ensure that the campus police report vanishes. If any detective asks questions, remind them that their municipal pension fund is subject to my committee’s review. Do you understand me, Thomas?”

Chief Higgins’ trembling voice answered over the speakers:

“Yes, Senator. I understand. We’ll make sure the girl’s father never gets a case number.”

“Good. Make sure the father knows that if he opens his mouth, I will have the IRS audit his life until he doesn't have a roof over his head. The Sterling name does not get dragged through the mud for some nobody.”

The ballroom went deathly, terrifyingly silent.

Three hundred wealthy donors froze with their champagne glasses halfway to their mouths. The string quartet stopped playing. The journalists in the press pen gasped, their cameras pivoting instantly from the senator’s face to the massive screen.

Senator Sterling’s face turned an ashen, ghostly white. She grabbed the sides of the podium, her knuckles turning bone-white. "Turn that off! Turn it off! That is a deepfake! That is Russian disinformation!"

The screen did not turn off.

Instead, the display split into three panels:

Panel One showed the bank transfer receipts proving Senator Sterling had accepted four point two million dollars in illegal kickbacks from Holbrook Defense Dynamics, routed through a shell company registered in the British Virgin Islands.

Panel Two displayed the raw, unedited footage of Brantley Sterling holding Chloe Vance’s arms behind her back, smiling coldly as Chad Kensington shattered her jaw with a heavy combat boot.

Panel Three showed the Department of Justice arrest warrants, signed ten minutes ago by the Chief Justice of the Federal Circuit Court, charging Senator Evelyn Sterling with felony public corruption, witness tampering, obstruction of justice, and treasonous misappropriation of defense funds.

"Mom..." Brantley whimpered, his face turning green. He dropped his glass of cider. The crystal shattered on the polished marble stage, splashing liquid across his mother’s emerald gown. "Mom, what is that? Why do they have the video?"

Senator Sterling tried to speak, but her vocal cords failed her. She stood before three hundred of her closest allies and two million live television viewers, completely stripped of her power, exposed as a corrupt, treasonous criminal who traded military secrets to cover up her son’s sadistic crimes.

The heavy mahogany doors at the entrance of the ballroom were kicked open with a thunderous crash.

Special Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, flanked by Armed Forces Criminal Investigation Division (CID) officers in full dress blues, marched down the center aisle in two disciplined columns.

Leading the arrest team was Special Agent in Charge David Vance—no relation to me, but an incorruptible veteran investigator who had been waiting seven years to bring Evelyn Sterling down.

Agent Vance walked up the marble steps of the stage, produced a set of steel handcuffs, and looked down at the trembling senator.

"Senator Evelyn Sterling," Agent Vance announced into the live microphone so the entire nation could hear. "By order of the United States District Court and the Department of the Army, you are under arrest for treason, bribery, and federal obstruction of justice. You have the right to remain silent."

"You can't do this to me!" Sterling shrieked, her composed facade completely crumbling into hysterical rage. "I am a United States Senator! I built this committee! You will lose your pension, your badge, your life!"

"Save it for the grand jury, Evelyn," Agent Vance said coldly, snapping the cuffs over her diamond bracelets with a sharp, satisfying click.

Two CID officers stepped behind Brantley Sterling.

Brantley tried to scramble behind the podium, sobbing like a terrified child. "Don't touch me! I didn't kick her! It was Chad! Chad did it! I just held her! Please, don't put me in jail! My mom will pay you whatever you want!"

"Brantley Sterling," the CID officer said, wrenching Brantley’s arms behind his back and forcing him to his knees. "You are under arrest for felony aggravated assault, conspiracy to commit murder, and human rights violations. Shut your mouth."

As the mother and son were marched down the center aisle in chains, past the silent, disgusted gazes of the city's highest elite, Leo Reyes stood in the back of the room, touched his earpiece, and spoke with calm satisfaction:

"Target Bravo is neutral, Commander. The Senator is in irons, and the boy is crying for his mommy."

In the earpiece, my voice answered with steady resolve:

"Good work, Leo. Rendezvous at the Holbrook Defense industrial complex. It’s time to cut the head off the snake."
