Chapter 4 - The Financial Guillotine Falls on Kensington

At 0830 hours, the executive boardroom on the fifty-second floor of the Kensington Tower offered a panoramic view of the entire city.
Arthur Kensington, a ruthless sixty-year-old titan of industry with razor-sharp gray hair, wearing a four-thousand-dollar bespoke Italian suit, stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass window holding a tumbler of twenty-five-year-old scotch.
Sitting at the long obsidian conference table was his son, Chad Kensington. Chad was twenty-one, athletic, with styled blonde hair and a smug, arrogant smirk that had never been slapped off his face in his entire privileged life.
"Dad, I’m telling you, it’s fine," Chad scoffed, spinning an expensive gold Montblanc pen between his fingers. "The girl’s a nobody. Her old man works in security or something. Higgins at the precinct said the police report will list it as a random mugging by unidentified suspects. Why did you make me drive all the way back from the lake house at dawn?"
Arthur turned around, his face dark with controlled irritation. He walked to the table and slammed his glass down with enough force to crack the crystal base.
"Because you were sloppy, Chad!" Arthur snarled. "You broke her jaw in six places! Do you know how hard it is to make a multiple comminuted fracture look like a random mugging? The hospital surgeon was asking questions! I had to wire seventy-five thousand dollars to that spineless dean just to wipe the security servers!"
Chad rolled his eyes, leaning back in his leather executive chair. "So what? Seventy-five grand is pocket change for us. You make that in five minutes on the municipal concrete contracts. Besides, the bitch was going to ruin my GPA. She had evidence on the chemistry exam ring. If I got suspended, I wouldn't get into Wharton."
"You don't get it," Arthur hissed, leaning over his son. "It’s not the money. It’s the timing. The city council votes on the sixty-million-dollar waterfront bond at noon today. If the press catches even a whisper of an assault investigation involving my name, the mayor will hesitate. I cannot have this deal compromised by your pathetic, drunken sadism!"
Before Chad could answer, the double frosted-glass doors of the boardroom were thrown open.
In rushed Harold Vance, the chief financial officer of Kensington Development Holdings, his face pale as chalk, his silk tie loosened, clutching a stack of freshly printed financial printouts.
"Arthur! We have a catastrophic anomaly!" Harold shouted, his voice cracking with sheer panic.
Arthur frowned, his arrogance reasserting itself. "Harold, calm down. What anomaly? Did the council postpone the vote?"
"No! It's the accounts!" Harold gasped, dropping the papers onto the glass table. "Ten minutes ago, our primary liquidity accounts at JPMorgan and Wells Fargo were locked under a Section 311 Patriot Act Patriot Act freeze! Over eighty-four million dollars in operating capital has been frozen by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network!"
Arthur’s eyes narrowed into slits. "That’s impossible. FinCEN needs a federal warrant signed by a district judge to execute a Section 311 freeze. Call our attorneys at Kirkland & Ellis immediately!"
"I did!" Harold screamed, his hands shaking violently. "Their lines are dead! And that's not the worst of it! Look at the monitors!"
Harold grabbed the remote control and flicked on the four massive television displays mounted on the boardroom wall.
CNBC’s breaking news banner was flashing bright red:
BREAKING NEWS: KENSINGTON HOLDINGS UNDER MASSIVE FEDERAL PROBE FOR FRAUD, EMBEZZLEMENT, AND OFFSHORE LAUNDERING. SEC SUSPENDS TRADING. ASSETS SEIZED GLOBALLY.
On the screen, a prominent financial anchor was speaking with rapid urgency:
"...Reports are flooding in that whistleblowers have leaked over forty gigabytes of unredacted financial ledgers detailing a twenty-year systematic bribery ring run by Arthur Kensington. The documents include forged safety inspection reports for twelve major municipal bridges and commercial towers, showing sub-standard concrete was deliberately used to pocket over forty million dollars in state funds. The Department of Justice has already deployed federal marshals..."
"Turn it off!" Arthur roared, his face turning an apoplectic shade of purple. "Turn that garbage off! It’s a smear campaign! Who leaked those files? Who had access to the Cayman servers?"
Suddenly, the lights in the boardroom blinked three times and went completely out.
The television screens flickered, went black, and then simultaneously rebooted into a single, high-contrast command interface.
In the center of the four screens, a dark silver emblem appeared: an eagle clutching three crossed daggers above the Latin words: VANGUARDIA INVICTA.
A distorted, deep baritone voice echoed from the conference room’s surround-sound speaker system:
"Good morning, Arthur Kensington."
Arthur jumped back from the table, staring wildly at the ceiling speakers. "Who is this? Is this a ransomware attack? I have connections in the NSA! I will have you tracked and executed for corporate terrorism!"
The voice chuckled—a dry, chilling sound that made the hair on the back of Chad’s neck stand up.
"Your connections in the NSA have just been relieved of duty, Arthur. As of 0842 hours, your offshore shell companies in Grand Cayman, Zurich, and Panama have been liquidated. The funds have been redistributed to the victims of your sub-standard construction collapses over the past twelve years. Your personal net worth is currently calculated at four dollars and twelve cents."
Chad jumped up from his chair, pointing aggressively at the screen. "You think you can scare us, you cyber-freak? Do you know who my mother is? Do you know who Wyatt Holbrook’s father is? You're dead! My dad will buy your entire family and throw them in a ditch!"
The screen shifted.
A high-definition video appeared on the four monitors.
It was the raw, unedited footage from behind the Fairview Science Pavilion from the previous night.
The video was crystal clear. It showed Chad Kensington wrapping his hands into Chloe’s hair, slamming her face into the concrete pillar, and laughing as he stomped on her jaw while Brantley Sterling held her arms.
Above the video, a live counter showed that the file was currently streaming across every social media platform, news agency, and local broadcast station in the United States.
Over forty million views in three minutes.
"Your son’s face is now the most recognized image on the internet, Arthur," the voice over the speakers stated coldly. "The world knows what your family really is. Not gods. Not kings. Just cowardly animals who prey upon teenage girls."
"No..." Chad whimpered, stumbling backward until his spine hit the glass window. The smug arrogance on his face shattered into pure, unadulterated terror. "Dad... Dad, do something! Stop the video!"
Arthur Kensington’s phone rang. It was the private, encrypted line from the Fairview Chief of Police.
Arthur snatched the phone, pressing it to his ear with trembling fingers. "Higgins! Higgins, thank God! Get your SWAT team down to the tower right now! We are under attack!"
On the other end of the line, Police Chief Thomas Higgins did not sound like an ally. He sounded like a broken, sobbing old man.
"Arthur... it’s over," Higgins wept over the phone. "Federal marshals just raided my home. They found the offshore ledgers. They found the security tapes. The Senator is gone. Holbrook is being detained. Get out of the country, Arthur... get out right now if you can—"
The call ended with the sound of steel handcuffs clicking and the sharp shout of a federal tactical team: “Federal agents! On the ground! Put your hands behind your back!”
The line went dead.
Arthur’s hand lost its grip on the phone. The device fell to the thick carpet.
At that exact moment, the heavy double doors of the boardroom were blown off their hinges with a deafening CRACK.
Flashbangs exploded in the reception corridor, filling the air with blinding white light and deafening percussion.
A dozen tactical federal agents wearing full tactical gear, body armor, and carrying submachine guns swarmed into the room, their laser sights painting red dots across Arthur and Chad Kensington’s chests.
"FEDERAL MARSHALS! NOBODY MOVE! DOWN ON THE FLOOR! DOWN ON THE FLOOR RIGHT NOW!"
Arthur Kensington, the man who had bought mayors, governors, and judges for thirty years, fell to his knees on the glass-covered carpet, his four-thousand-dollar suit ruined, weeping into his trembling hands.
Chad tried to run toward the private executive elevator, but a federal agent tackled him to the floor, driving his knee into Chad’s spine and wrenching his arms behind his back in a pair of heavy steel cuffs.
"Get off me!" Chad screamed, his voice cracking into a high-pitched shriek as his cheek was pressed hard against the cold floor. "Do you know who I am? I'm Chad Kensington! My dad owns this city!"
The arresting federal agent leaned down, tightening the cuffs until the metal bit into Chad’s wrists.
"Your dad doesn't even own the shirt on his back anymore, kid," the agent spat. "You're going to federal detention for aggravated felony assault and racketeering. Welcome to the real world."

As Chad was dragged out of the room, weeping and begging for mercy, the boardroom television screens displayed one final message before going black:
VANGUARD SENDS ITS REGARDS.
