Chapter 10 - Confrontation in the VIP Penthouse Suite

While the legal machinery ground the perpetrators into dust, there was one final loose thread that needed to be severed.
Arthur Kensington’s personal attorney, Richard Vance—a slick, corrupt corporate fixer who had spent thirty years burying the family’s illicit bodies—was currently packing three leather duffel bags inside his penthouse suite at the Grand Regency Hotel.
The room was filled with antique art, gold bullion bars, and several foreign passports with forged identities.
"Hurry up!" Richard shouted to his assistant over the phone, tucking a stack of Swiss bearer bonds into his coat. "The charter flight leaves the private executive airstrip in thirty minutes! The feds haven't frozen the Zurich vault yet!"
"The charter flight has been cancelled, Richard," a voice spoke from the shadows of the living room.
Richard froze.
He slowly turned around, his hand instinctively reaching toward the silver revolver sitting on the marble bar counter.
Sitting in the plush velvet armchair near the balcony was Commander Alexander Vance.
Beside me stood Marcus Brody, leaning casually against the doorframe, his massive arms crossed over his chest.
Richard swallowed hard, his face glistening with cold sweat. "Who... who are you? How did you get past hotel security?"
"Hotel security was relieved of duty twenty minutes ago," I said calmly. "Sit down, Richard."
Richard didn't sit. He lunged toward the bar counter, grabbing for the revolver.
In the blink of an eye, Marcus was across the room. His hand clamped down on Richard’s forearm, twisting the lawyer’s wrist with a sickening snap.
Richard let out a strangled shriek of agony, the revolver dropping harmlessly to the plush carpet. Marcus shoved him backward into a leather chair, standing over him like an inescapable mountain of wrath.
"You have a very impressive record, Richard," I said, pulling a manila folder from my coat. "Thirty years of drafting non-disclosure agreements for victims of Arthur Kensington’s predatory violence. In 2016, you paid off a college sophomore whose car was totaled by Chad while driving drunk. In 2019, you threatened a female student who tried to report Brantley Sterling for sexual assault."
Richard cradled his broken wrist, sobbing with pain and terror. "I was just doing my job! I'm an attorney! Attorney-client privilege protects my actions!"
"Attorney-client privilege does not protect a co-conspirator in a federal racketeering enterprise," I said. "At 0600 hours this morning, the Department of Justice unsealed an indictment for your immediate arrest under federal obstruction statutes."
I tossed the folder into his lap.
Inside were copies of every text message, email, and encrypted wire transfer Richard had sent over the past forty-eight hours attempting to liquidate Arthur Kensington’s stolen assets.
"You have one chance to avoid spending the rest of your life in a maximum-security prison, Richard," I told him.
Richard looked up through tears of pain. "What? What do you want? I’ll give you everything! I have three million dollars in bearer bonds right here in this bag!"
"I don't want your dirty money," I replied. "I want the master offshore ledger that contains the names of every judge, every politician, and every municipal official Arthur Kensington has bribed for the past twenty years."
Richard stared at me in shock. "If I give you that... they will kill me. The people on that list are the most powerful figures in the state!"
Marcus leaned down, his scarred face inches from Richard’s eyes. "Richard, look at me. Look at my Commander. Do you think the people on that list are more dangerous than Task Force Vanguard?"
Richard looked from Marcus to me.
He saw no fear. He saw no hesitation. He saw an elite military force that had dismantled an entire billion-dollar dynasty in less than twenty-four hours without firing a single unsanctioned bullet.
Richard reached trembling fingers into his inner coat pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted titanium USB key.
"The master ledger is in there," Richard whispered, completely defeated. "The encryption key is the birthdate of Arthur’s first wife. It has every wire, every offshore account, every bribe."
I took the titanium drive and slipped it into my pocket.
"Thank you, Richard," I said, turning toward the door.
"Wait!" Richard cried, clutching his broken wrist. "What about me? What about my deal?"
I paused at the entrance of the penthouse.
"Your deal is that you will be alive when the FBI agents walking down the hallway right now put you in handcuffs."
As Marcus and I stepped into the service elevator, the sound of federal agents shouting commands and kicking open the penthouse door echoed down the corridor:
May you like
"FEDERAL AGENTS! PUT YOUR HANDS WHERE WE CAN SEE THEM!"
The cleanup was complete.
