Chapter 9 - Caleb’s Loyalty on the Witness Stand

Three weeks passed.
I was relocated to a quiet, sunlit private cottage operated by a specialized youth protection network in northern Ohio. For the first time in my life, I had a bedroom with an interior lock, a window that overlooked a flower garden, and three meals a day with people who spoke to me in gentle, kind voices.
My ribs were healing. The purple bruises on my neck had faded into faint, pale yellow shadows. I spent my days reading engineering textbooks and walking along the quiet country roads with my court-appointed advocate, Sarah.
Meanwhile, the walls were closing in on my brother, Caleb.
Faced with felony charges of Aiding and Abetting Aggravated Assault, Witness Tampering, and Grand Larceny, Caleb sat in an interrogation room at the county prosecutor’s office, his varsity jacket gone, wearing a wrinkled button-down shirt, sweating under the fluorescent lights.
Across the table sat ADA Marcus Thorne and Detective Cole Vance.
“Caleb,” Thorne said, tossing a manila folder onto the table. “Your father’s defense team just filed their preliminary witness list. Do you know who is at the top of that list?”
Caleb swallowed hard, shaking his head.
Thorne opened the folder and pointed to a signed affidavit from Daniel Mercer.
“Your father is claiming that you were the one who pushed Emma down the stairs,” Thorne said smoothly. “He claims he was in his home office when he heard the commotion, and that he only drove Emma to the ER to protect you from criminal prosecution.”
Caleb stared at the paper, his jaw dropping in absolute horror. “What?! That’s a lie! Dad threw her! He told me to grab her arms so she couldn't run out the front door!”
“That’s not what his high-priced attorneys are telling the grand jury,” Detective Vance replied, leaning in. “Your father is facing twenty-five years in state prison. He is sixty-two years old; twenty-five years is a life sentence for him. He has already transferred three of his shell companies into private trusts and prepared to sacrifice you to save his own skin.”
Caleb’s face turned an ashen gray.
The illusion of the 'golden boy,' the loyal son who joined in the cruelty to earn his father’s praise, shattered into dust.
Tears began streaming down Caleb’s cheeks—not tears of remorse, but tears of a cornered coward realizing he had been used as an expendable pawn.

“I’ll testify,” Caleb choked out, his voice shaking uncontrollably. “I’ll tell you everything. I’ll tell you where he hides the cash, where the other recordings are, and how he bribed the school board. Just don't send me to prison.”
“Sign the cooperation agreement,” Thorne said, sliding a pen across the table.
