Chapter 8 - The Smashed Laptop in the Basement Furnace

While investigators were cataloging the contents of the safe, another forensic specialist named Tom Kelly opened the cast-iron door of the basement’s high-efficiency industrial boiler.

Sitting among the dark ash was the charred, melted aluminum chassis of my school MacBook—the one Dad had smashed six months ago.

Although the screen and keyboard were incinerated, the specialized solid-state drive (SSD) was encased in an aftermarket titanium protective sled I had installed myself after my first laptop was destroyed.

Technician Kelly carefully extracted the drive using sterile tongs and placed it into an anti-static forensic container.

Three hours later, at the state crime laboratory in downtown Columbus, forensic digital analysts managed to recover 100% of the raw data from the drive’s flash memory chips.

What they found sent shockwaves through the District Attorney’s office:

The drive contained complete, unedited screen-recording logs of Daniel Mercer accessing my grandmother’s offshore trust accounts on the night of her death in 2021, transferring $2.4 million into his personal offshore accounts while my grandmother was in a coma at St. Jude’s Memorial.

It also contained an audio recording from our dining room table four years ago, where Daniel and Caleb laughed over dinner about how they had successfully convinced my middle school principal that my broken collarbone was from a gymnastics accident.

“She’s a genius,” Assistant District Attorney Marcus Thorne said, reviewing the digital timeline. “This seventeen-year-old girl built a forensic case that rivaled a federal task force.”
