Chapter 15 - The Dawn of a New Life and True Love Reborn

Six months later.
The gentle, rhythmic sound of ocean waves lapping against the shore filled the warm summer air.
A soft coastal breeze rustled the white linen curtains of our sun-drenched beach cottage in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The scent of salt water, blooming hydrangeas, and fresh morning coffee drifted through the open French doors.
I stood on the wraparound wooden porch, wearing a loose sundress, holding a warm mug of chamomile tea in both hands, looking out over the sparkling blue waters of the Atlantic.
We had left New York City behind forever.
Christopher had used his legitimate personal savings to open a non-profit financial consultancy, helping small businesses and working-class families recover from predatory lending and corporate fraud. I had opened an art restoration studio in the historic village center.
A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around my waist from behind.
Christopher rested his chin on my shoulder, his breathing warm and peaceful against my neck. His skin smelled purely of ocean air and cedarwood.
"What are you thinking about, Penny?" he whispered softly, kissing the curve of my neck.
I turned around in his embrace, looking up into the dark brown eyes that I loved more than life itself.
He reached out—with his right hand—and gently tucked a stray lock of hair behind my ear.
"I was thinking about the first kiss behind the campus chapel," I smiled, tracing the jawline of the only man who truly owned my heart. "And how you promised that you would never break my heart."
Christopher’s expression softened with infinite tenderness. He leaned down, his forehead resting against mine, his fingers intertwining with mine, our matching platinum wedding rings catching the morning sunlight.
"I will spend the rest of my life keeping that promise, Penelope," he murmured. "No more secrets. No more shadows. Just you, me, and our future."
"Speaking of our future..." I said softly, taking his right hand and gently placing his palm against my lower abdomen.
Christopher froze.
His eyes widened in shock, then filled with tears of pure, unadulterated joy. He looked down at my stomach, then up at my face, a breathless laugh escaping his lips.
"Penny... are you...?"
"We're having a baby, Chris," I whispered, tears of happiness spilling over my eyelashes. "A little girl. Due in December."
Christopher let out a triumphant shout that echoed across the quiet beach, lifted me into the air, and spun me around on the sunlit porch as the ocean waves crashed in celebration below.
The nightmare of the past was gone. The ghosts had been laid to rest.
