Chapter 12 - A Deadly Ambush on Interstate 95

The four mercenaries instantly raised their weapons, red laser sights painting glowing dots across Christopher's chest and my forehead.

Christopher didn't flinch. He walked forward until he was standing ten feet from Gabriel Vance, his hands visible and empty at his sides.

"Call off your hit squad, Gabriel," Christopher said, his voice echoing with cold authority in the stone chamber. "The FBI has already raided your shell companies in Zurich and the Cayman Islands. By tomorrow morning, Interpol will freeze every asset under the Vance name."

Gabriel Vance chuckled—a dry, aristocratic sound filled with supreme confidence.

"Interpol is a bureaucratic joke, dear boy," Gabriel replied, adjusting the cuffs of his cashmere coat. "With two hundred million in untraceable bearer bonds and rough African diamonds resting behind this steel door, I can buy a new identity, a new private island, and a new life in Dubai before the Americans even file their extradition paperwork."

"You need the master biometric and the twelve-digit key to open that door without triggering the thermal fail-safe," Christopher said. "Christian didn't have the key. Our father only gave it to me."

Gabriel smiled, revealing a row of unnaturally white, predatory teeth. "Which is precisely why I didn't have my men shoot you on the roof in Manhattan. Step up to the console, Christopher. Open the vault, and I will allow you and your lovely wife to walk out of these woods alive."

"You're lying," I spoke up, my voice ringing clear against the damp granite walls. "The moment that vault opens, your men will execute both of us and dump our bodies in the lake just like Christian tried to do."

Gabriel looked at me, his cold blue eyes raking over my face with mild amusement. "You have a remarkably intelligent wife, Christopher. A pity she married into such an unfortunate family."

Gabriel drew a silenced Beretta from his coat, walked over to me, and pressed the cold steel barrel against my temple.

"Open the vault, Christopher," Gabriel whispered softly. "Or her brains will decorate this stone wall before I count to three. One... two—"

"Stop!" Christopher commanded, his voice shaking with raw, desperate fury. "I'll open it. Let her go."

Gabriel lowered the weapon an inch, smirking. "A sensible boy. Proceed."

Christopher stepped up to the massive vault console. The digital interface was ancient, featuring an analog bronze dial alongside an illuminated biometric scanner.

Christopher placed his right hand onto the scanner.

BIOMETRIC RECOGNITION: BENNETT, CHRISTOPHER J.

STATUS: PRIMARY HEIR.

"Now the code," Gabriel demanded, stepping up behind Christopher, his mercenaries moving closer with heavy duffel bags ready to load the fortune.

Christopher reached for the bronze dial. He turned it three clicks to the right: 1-9-9-2.

He turned it four clicks to the left: 1-0-1-4.

Then, his fingers hovered over the final red toggle switch labeled EMERGENCY PURGE & SEAL.

Christopher looked back at Gabriel. "Do you know what my father’s final words to me were before he took Christian and destroyed our family?"

Gabriel frowned, his eyes narrowing with sudden suspicion. "What are you talking about?"

"He told me," Christopher whispered with a savage, triumphant grin, "that a real man burns down the empire before he lets a leech take his home."

Christopher slammed his fist down onto the red toggle switch.

KLAXON ALARM! CRITICAL SYSTEM OVERRIDE INITIATED! THERMAL INCINERATION IN 30 SECONDS!

A deafening siren erupted inside the subterranean bunker. Heavy steel blast shutters slammed down across the stone corridor behind us, cutting off the main exit.

"Kill him!" Gabriel screamed in absolute panic.

The chamber descended into total, chaotic warfare.

Christopher spun around, grabbed Gabriel's gun wrist, and snapped it with brutal, calculated force. Gabriel howled in agony as the Beretta dropped to the floor. Christopher scooped up the weapon, fired two precise shots into the chest of the nearest mercenary, and tackled Gabriel to the ground.

"Penny! The drainage conduit beneath the floor! Crawl!" Christopher roared over the wailing alarms.

I dropped to my knees, ripped open the rusted iron grating of the ancient water drainage pipe built into the foundation floor, and slid into the cold, rushing water of the underground conduit leading directly out to the lake.

Behind me, the vault door's internal thermal charges ignited with a blinding, roaring wave of white-hot thermite fire.

BOOM!

The two-hundred-million-dollar fortune—the bonds, the diamonds, the sins of the Bennett empire—erupted into an inescapable vortex of two-thousand-degree flame.

Gabriel Vance and his remaining mercenaries screamed as the wall of fire engulfed the chamber.

Christopher dove into the drainage conduit just as the subterranean ceiling collapsed under the intense heat, burying the vault, the syndicate, and Gabriel Vance beneath hundreds of tons of burning granite.

The rushing water swept Christopher and me through the dark concrete pipe, shooting us out into the freezing, moonlit waters of Lake Blackwood.

We surfaced into the cool night air, gasping for breath, swimming desperately toward the pine-lined shore as the entire Blackwood Estate collapsed into a massive crater of dust and roaring flame on the cliff above.
