Chapter 13 - The Mastermind Unmasked

We dragged ourselves out of the dark water onto the rocky shore of Lake Blackwood, our bodies shivering violently from the cold, our clothes soaked, our skin coated in soot and lake silt.
Across the water, the burning ruins of the Blackwood Estate illuminated the night sky in brilliant shades of orange and crimson. The two-hundred-million-dollar syndicate vault was gone—incinerated into ash and sealed beneath tons of molten rock forever.
I collapsed onto the damp grass, coughing up lake water, staring at the sky.
Christopher crawled over to me, his face bruised, his knuckles bleeding, his breath coming in ragged gasps. He pulled off his wet jacket and wrapped it around my shaking shoulders, pulling me tightly against his chest.
"We did it," he whispered, his voice trembling with tears of profound relief. "It's gone, Penny. It's all gone. The syndicate is dead."
I wrapped my arms around his neck, burying my face in his chest, sobbing tears of pure exhaustion and joy. "We're alive. We survived."
Suddenly, the blinding glare of high-powered searchlights cut through the pine trees.
Three black tactical vehicles and four state police cruisers tore down the dirt access road, their sirens silent, their red and blue emergency strobes painting the forest in flashing light.
Dozens of armed federal agents and state troopers in tactical gear stepped out, weapons drawn, surrounding the clearing.
Special Agent Sarah Ross stepped out of the lead vehicle, holding a megaphone.
"Christopher Bennett! Penelope Bennett! Stay where you are! Medical teams are advancing!"
We didn't move. We sat together on the rocky shore, holding hands, as the federal agents secured the perimeter and emergency paramedics rushed forward with thermal blankets and medical kits.
Agent Ross walked over, looking up at the burning mansion on the cliff, then down at Christopher with a look of stunned disbelief.
"We tracked the satellite thermal signature from the explosion," Ross said, kneeling beside us. "Gabriel Vance?"
"Buried under fifty feet of collapsed granite," Christopher replied quietly, his voice hoarse. "Along with every diamond and bond my father ever stole. The empire is ash."
Agent Ross let out a long, slow whistle, then extended her hand to help Christopher to his feet.
"Your testimony and the Project Janus files have already triggered seventy-four federal arrest warrants across three continents," Ross said. "Arthur Vance has turned state's evidence. The European laundering nodes have been dismantled. For the first time in thirty years, the Bennett syndicate has been completely wiped off the map."
She turned to look at me, offering a warm, reassuring smile. "Mrs. Bennett, you are officially the bravest woman I have ever met in my fifteen years with the Bureau."

"I just wanted my husband back," I said softly, leaning against Christopher's side.
"And you have him," Ross smiled. "Come on. Let's get both of you to a hospital and close this case forever."
