Chapter 9 - Betrayal in the Shadows: When My Closest Ally Tried to Use Her Vulnerability Against Me

The public destruction of Marcus Vance established Megan Foster as an untouchable figure in Atlanta high society. However, in the brutal underworld, cutting off the head of one snake often causes another to strike from the dark.
Three weeks after the gala, a different threat emerged from inside my own perimeter.
Julian Mercer had been my second-in-command for eight years. He managed the offshore logistics and private security contracts for Mason Holdings. He was sharp, ambitious, and secretly furious that my focus had shifted entirely toward legitimate urban development and restructuring our operations since Megan’s arrival.
Julian saw Megan not as an inspiration, but as a fatal distraction that made me weak.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon while I was in downtown Atlanta meeting with the city mayor to finalize the logistics hub contracts, Julian cornered Megan in the estate’s private library.
Megan was cataloging architectural blueprints for our new community center project when the heavy library doors clicked shut.
Julian Mercer stood near the doorway, impeccably dressed in a charcoal suit, a cold, condescending smirk playing across his thin lips. He held a leather folder in his hand.
“Miss Foster,” Julian said smoothly, stepping into the room. “We need to have a very realistic conversation about your future.”
Megan set her pencil down, her instincts immediately flaring. “If you need something regarding the logistics schedule, Julian, talk to Frank. I’m working on the design files.”
“I’m not here about the logistics schedule,” Julian said, tossing the folder onto the table in front of her. “Inside that folder is a one-way ticket to Switzerland, forged identity documents for you and your son, and a bank account preloaded with two million dollars in untraceable funds.”
Megan didn't open the folder. She crossed her arms, staring at him with cold detachment. “And what am I supposed to do for two million dollars, Julian?”
“You pack your bags, take your bastard kid, and disappear before sundown,” Julian sneered, dropping his polite facade. “Dominic has gone soft because of you. He’s liquidating profitable shadow contracts, turning our entire syndicate into a glorified charity foundation, and letting a penniless maid dictate policy. The council won't stand for it. If you leave quietly, you live like a queen. If you stay... accidents happen to little boys in big houses.”
Megan stood up slowly, her knuckles resting flat on the table.
She didn't show fear. She didn't hesitate.
“You’re pathetic, Julian,” Megan said, her voice dripping with pure disgust. “You think Dominic is weak because he doesn't rule through murder anymore? Dominic is ten times the man you’ll ever be, even sitting in that chair. You’re just a coward waiting for the king to look away so you can steal his scraps.”
Julian’s face twisted into ugly rage. He lunged forward, grabbing Megan’s sweater collar. “You listen to me, you little scullery maid—”
Crack.
Megan slammed a heavy brass paperweight directly across Julian’s cheekbone with all the force in her body.
Julian stumbled backward, howling in pain, blood pouring from a gash near his eye.
Before he could recover, the library doors were kicked off their hinges with a thunderous crash.
Frank stormed into the room with four tactical guards, assault rifles raised and locked onto Julian’s chest. Behind them, rolling into the room with eyes that burned with apocalyptic fury, was me.
I had monitored Julian’s encrypted communications for forty-eight hours; I had arrived thirty seconds earlier, listening through the security feed.
“Dominic!” Julian gasped, clutching his bleeding face, falling to his knees before my wheelchair. “She attacked me! She’s out of control—!”
“Shut up,” I said. The two words were delivered with a cold, terrifying finality that sucked the oxygen out of the room.
I rolled up until my footrests were touching Julian’s knees.
“You threatened a child in my home,” I whispered, leaning down, my voice vibrating with absolute venom. “You offered money to the woman who holds my heart, and you dared to lay a hand on her.”
Julian began to weep, realizing the catastrophic mistake he had made. “Dominic, please... twenty years of service—!”
“Frank,” I ordered, never taking my eyes off the traitor. “Strip him of every asset, revoke his security clearances, and hand him over to the district attorney with the full portfolio of his offshore embezzlement records. If he ever sets foot in the state of Georgia again, bury him.”
“Understood, boss,” Frank said, hauling the sobbing man out of the room by his collar.
I turned my wheelchair toward Megan.
She was still holding the brass paperweight, her chest heaving, a small cut on her knuckles from the impact. When she saw me looking at her, she dropped the heavy brass onto the table with a loud clatter and let out a shaky, exhausted breath.
“You hit him with the antique paperweight?” I asked, a mixture of awe and disbelief coloring my voice.
“He insulted my son,” Megan said, wiping her brow. “And he called you weak. I don't tolerate either.”
I reached out, taking her trembling, bruised hand into mine, bringing her knuckles gently to my lips.
May you like
“You are extraordinary, Megan Foster.”
Megan looked down into my eyes, her expression softening into pure warmth. “I told you, Dominic. I protect what’s mine.”
