Chapter 8 - The Gala Setup: Transforming the Scullery Maid into the Queen Atlanta Feared to Cross

The St. Regis gala was not a typical charity ball.

It was the annual gathering of Atlanta’s true power brokers—a high-stakes convergence of legitimate real estate titans, corrupt politicians, judges, and the shadow syndicates that controlled the southeastern distribution networks. For fifteen years, Dominic Mason had ruled that room through absolute fear and undisputed financial dominance.

Marcus Vance was attempting a coup.

By calling for an emergency council vote, he intended to claim that my physical disability and recent reclusive behavior made me unfit to control the northern logistics corridor. He planned to present Megan’s outstanding debt publicly as proof that my judgment was compromised by harboring a 'runaway thief.'

On Friday morning, I made my move.

“Cancel the standard security escort for the gala,” I instructed Frank in the grand foyer. “I’m taking a guest.”

Nancy stood beside a row of three high-end garment racks that had just been delivered by Atlanta’s top private couturier. “Miss Foster is upstairs trying on the selections now, Mr. Mason.”

When Megan descended the grand staircase forty minutes later, the entire room went completely still.

She wore a bespoke emerald-green silk evening gown that hugged her curves with regal elegance before cascading to the floor in sleek, shimmering folds. Her hair was swept up into an intricate, sophisticated updo, exposing the graceful line of her neck and shoulders. Around her throat rested a single, flawless Cartier diamond pendant from the Mason family vault.

She looked breathtaking. There was no trace of the exhausted cleaner in canvas sneakers; she looked every inch a queen ready to claim a throne.

Tommy, sitting in Nancy’s arms, clapped his little hands together and giggled. “Mama pretty!”

Megan flushed slightly, stepping down to the bottom of the stairs and looking down at me in my custom black-tie tuxedo. “How do I look?”

“You look like the most dangerous woman in this city,” I said honestly, my voice thick with admiration.

A radiant, confident smile spread across her lips. “Good. Because I have a few things to say to Marcus Vance.”

At eight-thirty that evening, the heavy double doors of the St. Regis grand ballroom swung open.

The room, packed with over three hundred of the state’s wealthiest and most ruthless elites, fell into immediate, dead silence as Frank rolled my wheelchair through the entryway.

Beside me, walking with her head held high, her hand resting gracefully and possessively on my shoulder, was Megan Foster.

Whispers exploded across the ballroom like wildfire.

“Is that Bradley Vance’s ex-fiancée?”

“Why is she with Dominic Mason?”

“Look at the diamond around her neck... that’s the Mason family heirloom!”

Marcus Vance was standing near the center stage, surrounded by a coalition of northern district bosses. When he turned and saw Megan standing beside me in an emerald gown worth more than his annual luxury budget, the champagne glass in his hand shattered against the floor.

I rolled smoothly to the center of the room, Megan matching my pace step for step.

“Marcus,” I projected my voice across the silent hall, every syllable ringing with chilling authority. “I understand you called a meeting to discuss the stability of Mason Holdings.”

Marcus swallowed hard, attempting to recover his composure in front of his allies. “Dominic... you brought a common delinquent to an executive council meeting. This woman owes eighty thousand dollars to my financial group. She is a fraud.”

Megan stepped forward half a pace, releasing my shoulder. Her voice was crystal clear, cutting through the cavernous ballroom without a single tremor of fear.

“The only fraud in this room is the Vance family,” Megan stated, pulling a sleek leather tablet from her clutch. “Yesterday afternoon, forensic accountants from Mason Holdings reviewed the digital audit logs of Vance Enterprises. They uncovered fourteen distinct instances of identity theft, forged commercial loan signatures, and offshore money laundering orchestrated by your nephew, Bradley Vance, with your direct authorization.”

She tapped the screen, and the massive projector screens behind the ballroom stage—previously displaying the Vance corporate logo—instantly flashed the decrypted bank transfers, forged signatures, and federal indictment filings.

The ballroom erupted into gasps of shock.

“You forged my name to steal from your own investors, Marcus,” Megan continued, her hazel eyes locking onto the pale, sweating man with lethal precision. “And tonight, the federal prosecutor’s office received the complete unredacted files. Your debt doesn't exist. But your twenty-year prison sentence certainly does.”

Marcus lunged forward in a blind, desperate rage. “You little bitch—!”

Frank stepped in between them instantly, shoving Marcus back onto the floor with one arm, while three armed federal marshals in plain clothes stepped out from the perimeter of the room, displaying their badges.

“Marcus Vance, you are under arrest for commercial fraud, grand larceny, and interstate racketeering,” the lead agent announced, snapping handcuffs onto Marcus’s wrists.

As Marcus was dragged out of the ballroom, screaming curses, the room turned back to face me and Megan.

I raised my crystal glass of water. “The northern corridor remains under Mason control. Enjoy the rest of your evening, gentlemen.”

May you like

Megan looked down at me, her eyes sparkling with triumphant joy. She bent down slightly, completely unbothered by the three hundred powerful people watching us, and pressed a soft, lingering kiss against my cheek.

“Multifunctional,” she whispered with a wink.
