Chapter 10 - The Kidnapping: The Terrifying Hour When Atlanta Remembered Why It Feared My Name

Julian Mercer’s arrest and Marcus Vance’s indictment should have ended the war. But cornered rats are at their most lethal when they have nothing left to lose.
Bradley Vance—Marcus’s disgraced nephew and Megan’s sociopathic ex-fiancé—had avoided arrest by hiding in an abandoned industrial sector near the Chattahoochee River. Fueled by cocaine, bankruptcy, and vengeful madness, Bradley allied with the remnants of Julian Mercer’s rogue security faction.
They knew they couldn't breach the Buckhead mansion. So they struck at the one moment of routine transition.
On a foggy Thursday morning, Nancy was escorting little Tommy to his private pediatric speech-therapy session in an armored town car driven by one of our trusted security drivers, David.
At an intersection two blocks from the clinic, a stolen cement mixer slammed into the side of the escort vehicle, disabling the engine. Four masked men armed with automatic weapons swarmed the car, shattering the reinforced glass with tactical breaching tools, incapacitating David with stun grenades, and tearing eighteen-month-old Tommy from Nancy’s screaming grasp.
The entire ambush took forty-eight seconds.
I was in my private study when Frank sprinted into the room, his face pale as ash.
“Boss... they took Tommy.”
Megan, who had been reviewing floor plans beside my desk, dropped her mug of tea. The ceramic shattered into a hundred pieces on the hardwood floor.
A silent, bloodcurdling scream tore from her throat before she collapsed to her knees, clutching her chest as if she had been shot through the heart. “No... no! Tommy! Oh God, Dominic, no!”
I didn't panic. The cold, calculating machine that had allowed me to survive twenty years of underworld warfare took over completely.
I rolled my wheelchair to Megan’s side, reached down with both arms, and pulled her up into my lap, holding her fiercely against my chest. “Look at me, Megan. Look at me right now.”
She looked up, her hazel eyes wild with pure, unimaginable maternal terror, tears streaming down her pale face. “Dominic... please... he’s just a baby... he’s only eighteen months old...”
“I swear on my father’s grave, on my life, on everything I own: I will bring your son back to you before the sun goes down,” I vowed, my voice steady as iron. “Not a single hair on his head will be harmed. Do you trust me?”
Megan choked back a sob, gripping my sweater with desperate strength. “I trust you. Please bring my baby home.”
I pressed a kiss to her forehead, set her gently onto the sofa, and turned my wheelchair toward Frank.
The warmth, the restraint, the civility I had cultivated over the past two months vanished instantly. The beast that ruled Atlanta was fully unleashed.
“Frank,” I commanded, my voice echoing like thunder through the mansion. “Lock down the entire city. Call every precinct captain on our payroll. Deploy all sixty-four tactical surveillance units. Shut down every highway exit heading north toward the state line. If any man in this town knows where Bradley Vance is hiding and doesn't speak within twenty minutes, burn his business to the ground.”
“Yes, Boss,” Frank answered, his eyes gleaming with deadly intent.
Within twelve minutes, the entire underground infrastructure of Atlanta mobilized. Informants talked, cellular tracking networks triangulated encrypted burner signals, and satellite feeds pinpointed an abandoned shipping warehouse along the Chattahoochee River.
Bradley Vance was there.
I pulled open the bottom drawer of my desk, unlocking a heavy biometric steel case. Inside rested my father’s customized silver .45-caliber pistol. I racked the slide back with a sharp, lethal snap and placed it securely in my shoulder holster.

“Boss,” Frank said, entering with tactical body armor. “You’re coming in the van?”
“I’m going inside the warehouse,” I replied with chilling finality. “Wheelchair or not, I will be the last thing Bradley Vance ever sees.”
