Chapter 8 - The Ledger of Blood

By sunrise, the Moretti estate was an armed fortress.Dozens of black SUVs lined the circular gravel driveway. Armed guards patrolled the perimeter with Belgian Malinois and Cane Corsos. The morning fog lingered over the gardens, cold and pale, but inside the great house, the atmosphere was completely transformed.Nicholas Rossi and Sal Falcone were being held without bail in a federal detention facility, facing charges that guaranteed they would spend the rest of their natural lives behind bars. The Falcone syndicate was crumbling. Their bank accounts were frozen, their commercial fronts raided, and their enforcers scattered into hiding. In the master suite on the second floor—a room I had only ever entered to polish the antique brass mirrors—I sat by the tall bay window, wrapped in a thick cashmere robe. My mother sat across from me in a plush velvet armchair, clutching a cup of hot chamomile tea, her eyes red from crying, but her face peaceful for the first time in two years.“He cleared everything, Emma,” she whispered, shaking her head in utter disbelief. “The deed to our building was delivered to me an hour ago. Free and clear. The debts... everything is gone.”“I know, Mom,” I said softly, looking down at my hands. The door opened, and Luca stepped inside. He wore a dark blue tailored suit, looking every bit the untouchable king of Chicago’s underworld, but the moment his eyes landed on me, the cold authority in his posture vanished. My mother stood up instantly, bowing her head slightly. “Mr. Moretti... I don't know how to thank you—”“You don't need to thank me, Mrs. Vance,” Luca said with genuine respect, stepping forward to gently clasp her hands. “Your daughter saved this house from a cancer that had been eating away at it for years. If anyone owes a debt, it is me.”He nodded toward Marco, who was waiting in the hallway.“Marco will take you back to your home in Lake Forest for now,” Luca told my mother gently. “You will have around-the-clock protection until every last associate of Sal Falcone is accounted for.”My mother looked at me, then back at Luca. A mother’s intuition is sharper than any blade; she saw the unspoken electricity hanging in the air between us. She smiled softly, squeezed my hand, and quietly slipped out of the room, closing the door behind her.Luca walked over to the window, standing beside my chair. He looked down at the gardens below—at the greenhouse where Isabella had pushed me, at the stone terrace where this nightmare had begun just forty-eight hours ago.“The board of directors for the port authority voted this morning,” Luca said quietly. “Nicholas Rossi’s seat has been stripped. The development contracts are entirely under my control.”“You won,” I said softly.“We won,” he corrected, turning his gaze down to me.He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box. He laid it in my lap.I looked up at him, my heart hammering against my ribs. “Luca... what is this?”“Open it.”With trembling fingers, I opened the clasp.Inside wasn't a diamond ring.It was a heavy, platinum keycard and an embossed gold seal bearing the emblem of Moretti Financial Holdings—the premier forensic accounting firm that managed the family’s legitimate multi-billion-dollar corporate empire.Beneath the seal was a business card.*Emma Vance. Chief Financial Auditor.*Tears welled in my eyes. I looked up at him, stunned into speechlessness.“You spent years hiding your mind, Emma,” Luca said softly, kneeling down on one knee beside my chair, just as he had done in the wet gravel two days ago. “I don't want a trophy on my arm. I don't want a woman who cowers behind high society parties. I want a partner. Someone who can see through the smoke and mirrors, someone who isn't afraid to look into the darkness and tell me the truth.”“Luca...” I whispered, my voice breaking. “You know who you are. You know what your world is. It’s blood, danger, and enemies lurking behind every corner.”“I do,” he said, his hand coming up to cup my jaw, his thumb tracing my cheekbone with intoxicating tenderness. “And I know that without you, that world is cold, hollow, and meaningless.”He leaned in, his lips brushing against mine, soft and filled with an ancient, unyielding promise.“You have a choice, Emma,” he murmured against my mouth. “I have bought a penthouse in Manhattan under your name. I have placed five million dollars in an offshore trust that no one can ever touch. You can take your mother, walk onto a private jet at O'Hare this afternoon, and never look back at Chicago again. You can have a safe, quiet, ordinary life.”My breath seized.“And the other choice?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.Luca’s dark eyes locked onto mine, burning with a fire that consumed every shred of hesitation in my soul.“You stay here. You take that office on the top floor of the Moretti Tower. You wear my family’s name, you command my empire beside me, and you never bow your head to anyone again.”***
