Chapter 6 - The Shattered Circle

Chaos descended upon the Drake ballroom like a storm breaking over a calm sea.Security guards in black suits rushed the perimeter, but none of them dared draw a weapon. Everyone in that room knew who held the police badges in their pockets, and it wasn't the Falcones. It was Luca Moretti.Sal Falcone clawed desperately at Luca’s hand, his face mottled purple, gasping for air that wouldn't come.“Luca! Let him go!” Nicholas Rossi screamed, stepping forward, his hands shaking violently. “You’re throwing everything away! The business, the contracts—my family will destroy you!”Luca didn't even glance at him. With effortless, brutal strength, he shoved Sal Falcone down. The heavy man hit the polished hardwood on his hands and knees, choking, gasping for breath, coughing onto the polished floor.Luca casually adjusted his cufflinks, stepping back to my side as if he hadn't just single-handedly dismantled the city’s most feared loan shark.“Your family is finished, Nicholas,” Luca said calmly.Right on cue, the towering double doors of the ballroom swung wide open.A squad of federal agents in dark windbreakers, led by two Chicago police captains, marched into the ballroom. The brass badges gleamed beneath the chandeliers. The socialites gasped, backing away into corners, clutching their pearls.“Nicholas Rossi? Salvatore Falcone?” the lead FBI agent announced, pulling out a thick warrant. “You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, racketeering, and conspiracy to commit arson. Step forward with your hands visible.”Isabella shrieked. “No! This is a mistake! Luca, tell them! Tell them this is a lie!”She lunged forward, her diamond bracelets clattering, reaching for Luca’s lapel. Before she could touch him, Marco stepped between them like an iron wall, catching Isabella by both wrists with cold efficiency.“Step back, Miss Rossi,” Marco warned.Luca looked down at Isabella with utter disgust.“You tried to have an innocent woman burned in her bed to cover your uncle’s crimes,” Luca said, his voice cutting through her hysterical sobs like a razor. “You thought wearing my ring made you untouchable. But you were never my equal, Isabella. You were just a parasite who overplayed her hand.”Federal agents moved in, slapping cold steel handcuffs around Nicholas Rossi’s wrists, while two others hauled Sal Falcone off the floor. Isabella was escorted out behind them, sobbing, cursing, her designer gown dragging on the floor as the press cameras outside flashed relentlessly through the windows. The ballroom was left in stunned, breathless silence. The wealthiest families in Chicago stood motionless, staring at the aftermath of an empire falling in less than ten minutes.Luca turned his back on the wreckage. He looked down at me.The lethal, terrifying fury that had consumed him moments earlier was completely gone, replaced by a deep, dark warmth that took my breath away. He gently placed his hand on the small of my back, guiding me away from the center of the room.“Let’s go home, Emma,” he whispered.***The drive back to the Lake Forest estate was completely silent. The interior of the Maybach was warm, insulated from the cold Chicago wind. Outside, the city lights blurred into streaks of amber and white as we raced north along the darkened expressway.I sat back against the leather seat, my heart still racing, my body trembling from the sheer adrenaline crash. My swollen ankle was throbbing again, exhausted from standing, but for the first time in two years, the invisible noose around my neck was gone.My mother was safe. The debt was erased. The Falcones were in federal custody.I looked down at the massive emerald necklace resting against my collarbone. The weight of the stone felt impossible, a glaring reminder of the line I had crossed.“I should take this off,” I said softly, reaching around my neck to find the clasp. “It belongs to your family.”Luca’s hand reached out, covering mine. His long, calloused fingers gently wrapped around my wrists, stopping me.“Leave it,” he said.I looked at him. In the passing shadows of the highway lights, his sharp profile was illuminated in sharp relief.“Luca... everyone in that room thinks we are together,” I whispered, my voice trembling. “They heard what you said to Sal. You called me your woman.”Luca slowly turned his head to face me. He didn't let go of my hand. In fact, he laced his fingers through mine, his grip firm, warm, and possessive.“Do you think I say things I don't mean, Emma?”My breath hitched in my throat. “I’m your maid, Luca. Yesterday morning, I was cleaning mud off your terrace. I can't be part of your world. It’s too dangerous. It’s too violent.”“The violence was already at your door before you met me,” Luca said, his voice dropping into that deep, intoxicating cadence. “The only difference is, now you have an army standing between you and the dark.”He leaned closer, his dark eyes searching mine with a hunger that made my pulse roar in my ears.“When I saw you on that terrace yesterday, refusing to cry out in pain, protecting my dog even while you were broken... I knew what you were,” he murmured. “You have more spine than every aristocrat in that ballroom combined. I spent three years suffocating under my father’s political games, surrounded by liars and opportunists.”He reached up, his thumb brushing against my lower lip, tracing the crimson color.“You’re the first real thing that has walked into my house in ten years,” he whispered. “Do you really think I’m going to let you walk back out?”Before I could answer, the Maybach suddenly swerved violently. The screech of tires tore through the quiet night.Marco cursed violently from the front seat as he wrestled with the steering wheel. “Boss! Ambush! Two black SUVs just blew through the median!”A split second later, a deafening crash shook the armored car.Metal crumpled against metal. The sound of high-caliber rifle fire shattered the night, bullets slamming against the bulletproof glass like heavy hail.Luca didn't hesitate. In a fraction of a second, he threw his body over mine, pinning me down against the back seat, shielding my head and chest with his own frame as the car spun out of control into the dark tree line bordering the highway.***
