Chapter 12 - Scent of Gunpowder

The meeting ended near two in the morning, leaving the captains with clear, ruthless marching orders: seize the Bellandi distribution warehouses before dawn, seize their bank deposits, and execute anyone who resisted. As we walked back toward the private elevator, the silence in the corridor felt heavy, laced with the phantom scent of impending chaos."You were extraordinary in there," Luca murmured, wrapping an arm around my waist and pulling me flush against his side. The warmth of his body was intoxicating, a stark contrast to the freezing Chicago night outside."I just read what was in the ledgers, Luca," I breathed, leaning my head against his shoulder for a fleeting second. "I knew they would try to break you through me. I couldn't let them think I was a liability.""You are not a liability, Clara," he said softly, pressing a kiss to my temple. "You are my queen. And tonight, you proved it to every dog who thought about biting."The elevator dinged, the steel doors sliding open to reveal the subterranean parking garage. Two armored black Suburbans waited in the center lane, their engines humming quietly. Marco was standing by the driver's door of the lead vehicle, smoking a cigarette.Suddenly, Marco froze. He dropped the cigarette, reaching instantly for the Glock beneath his suit jacket."Boss! Get down!"A deafening crack tore through the concrete garage. The glass window beside the elevator shattered into a thousand jagged diamonds. Luca didn't hesitate; his body moved with inhuman speed. He threw himself over me, tackling me to the hard concrete floor, his massive frame shielding every inch of my body as bullets rained down against the pillar above our heads.*Spang! Spang! Clang!*The concussive noise bounced violently off the enclosed walls. The scent of ozone, burning gunpowder, and shattered concrete filled my lungs."Clara, stay behind me!" Luca roared, pulling a custom black Kimber .45 from his holster.Across the garage, muzzle flashes strobed from behind a parked maintenance van. Marco and our four perimeter guards opened fire simultaneously, creating an impenetrable wall of return suppression.Luca fired three precision shots over the hood of a nearby sedan. A scream echoed from the van, followed by the heavy thud of a body hitting the floor."How many?" Luca yelled over the gunfire."Six men!" Marco shouted back, ducking as a volley of rounds shredded the hood of his Suburban. "Silvio’s personal hit squad! They must have breached the security gates through the delivery ramp!"My heart was hammering violently against my ribs, but the paralyzing fear that once controlled me was gone. In its place was a white-hot fury. Silvio Bellandi thought he could hunt us like animals in our own territory.I looked down at the concrete floor. Beside my hand lay the dropped weapon of a guard who had been clipped in the shoulder—a compact 9mm Beretta.I didn't think. I acted.I reached out, my fingers wrapping around the cold textured grip. Luca caught the movement out of the corner of his eye, his gaze widening with shock, but before he could stop me, a shooter in tactical gear sprinted around the concrete pillar to our left, bringing his rifle up directly toward Luca’s exposed flank."Luca!" I screamed.I brought the gun up with both hands, exactly as I had seen Luca do in the compound shooting range, and pulled the heavy trigger.*BANG!*The recoil slammed through my wrists, but the shot was true. The bullet struck the shooter in the thigh. He stumbled, howling in pain, his rifle clattering to the floor. Before he could recover, Luca spun like an apex predator, firing two clean shots into the man's chest. The shooter collapsed, motionless. The garage fell into an abrupt, ringing silence. Smoke curled lazily toward the sprinkler heads above. The remaining four ambushers lay dead around the van, neutralized by Marco’s relentless fire.Luca turned toward me, his chest heaving, his dark eyes wide with an emotion I had never seen in him before: pure, unadulterated awe.He dropped to his knees in front of me, knocking the Beretta safely aside, and pulled my face into his hands. His palms were warm, trembling slightly with leftover adrenaline."You shot him," Luca whispered, his voice thick with reverence. "You saved my life.""He was trying to take you from me," I whispered back, my voice shaking as the adrenaline ebbed away, leaving me trembling in his arms. "And I won't let anyone take you."Luca crushed his lips against mine right there on the bloodstained concrete, a fierce, desperate kiss that tasted of iron, gunpowder, and an eternal, unbreakable vow.***
