Chapter 9 - THE DAWN AFTER THE DARK

The estate was quiet.

Answer one: Vanessa’s reign of terror was permanently finished.

The police had arrived within twenty minutes, pulling Vanessa Bellini—now revealed as Vanessa Vance—out the front doors in handcuffs. Her red silk gown was ruined, her dignity shattered, her face hidden from the flashing lights of the arriving squad cars. Daniel was hauled away in a separate cruiser, destined for a very long, very painful sentence in a federal penitentiary.

Now, hours later, the sun was beginning to rise over the Chicago skyline, casting a warm golden light through the shattered terrace doors.

Luca knelt on the floor beside Natalie and Leo.

He didn't open the velvet box. Instead, he placed it gently into Natalie’s hand.

"What is this?" Natalie asked, her voice raspy from crying.

"My mother's ring," Luca said softly. "I was supposed to put it on a monster's finger tonight. Instead, I want you to have it. Not as a proposal. As a promise."

Natalie looked up, her eyes wide with shock. "A promise for what?"

"That you will never carry another heavy vase," Luca smiled, a genuine, warm expression that erased the hardness from his face. "That you will never worry about rent, or medical bills, or running from the shadows. You saved my family’s legacy tonight, Natalie. And you protected this boy when his own blood wouldn't."

Eleanor walked over slowly. She knelt down beside them, her old joints popping. She looked at Leo, her eyes filling with fresh, happy tears.

"Hello, Leo," Eleanor whispered softly.

Leo peeked out from the folds of Luca’s oversized coat. He looked at the elderly woman, then looked up at Natalie for permission. Natalie nodded, a tear slipping down her cheek.

"Are you my grandma?" Leo asked.

Eleanor let out a wet laugh. "I am, sweetheart. And your father... he wants to meet you very soon. He's been dreaming about you for a long, long time."

Leo smiled, a bright, beautiful expression that finally chased the ghost of Vanessa from his face.

Luca stood, offering a hand to Natalie. He pulled her up gently, being careful of her injured ankle. He didn't let go of her hand once she was standing.

"I have a guest house in the Hamptons," Luca said quietly, his thumb brushing over Natalie's knuckles. "It has a big yard. A good school nearby. And a very expensive doctor who can look at that ankle."

Natalie looked at the mafia boss holding her hand. She saw past the tailored suits and the terrifying reputation. She saw the man who had wrapped a freezing child in his own coat and stood between her and a loaded gun.

"Are you coming with us?" Natalie asked softly.

Luca looked at her, his dark eyes softening completely.

"I wouldn't be anywhere else," he said.

Leo tugged on Luca’s pant leg. Luca looked down.

"Can I bring the coat?" Leo asked, pulling the heavy wool tightly around himself. "It smells like safety."

Luca crouched down and hoisted the six-year-old up onto his broad shoulders. Leo giggled, grabbing a fistful of Luca's hair to steady himself.

"You can keep the coat, kid," Luca laughed.

Natalie leaned her head against Luca’s arm as they walked out of the ruined dining room, stepping into the morning light. The nightmare was over. Eleanor had her family back. David was awake. And for the first time in her life, Natalie Brooks wasn't just a maid struggling to survive.

She was safe. She was loved. And she was finally home.
