Chapter 14 - THE PROMISE RING

David Vance collapsed onto the concrete floor of the wine cellar, the silver pocket watch slipping from his fingers and shattering against the ground.
Answer one: Eleanor hadn't stayed at the hospital. Silas had brought her to the Hamptons to show her the surveillance photos, hoping she could talk her son down. Instead, she had saved our lives.
The heavy, suffocating terror in the room finally broke.
"Natalie!"
Luca’s voice tore through the hallway. He sprinted into the wine cellar, bleeding from a deep cut above his eye, his pistol raised. When he saw David on the floor and Eleanor sobbing quietly against the doorframe, he dropped his weapon and rushed to us.
He wrapped his massive arms around me and Leo, burying his face in my hair. He was shaking. The fearless, untouchable mafia boss was trembling like a leaf.
"I've got you," Luca whispered, kissing the top of my head, then kissing Leo's forehead. "I've got you. It's over."
Silas walked in slowly, limping from the firefight upstairs. He looked down at David’s body, then gently placed a hand on Eleanor's shoulder.
"You did the right thing, Ellie," Silas said softly. "He wasn't the boy you raised anymore."
Eleanor nodded, weeping silently. She had lost her son to the poison of the Syndicate, but in doing so, she had saved her innocent grandson.
One month later.
The summer breeze off the Hamptons coast was warm and gentle. The shattered doors and broken gates of the estate had been completely repaired, but the heavy, oppressive atmosphere of a mob boss's fortress was gone.
Luca had made good on his word.
He didn't just walk away from the Chicago Syndicate; he dismantled his connection to it entirely. He handed all his territories, ledgers, and legitimate businesses over to Silas, demanding only one thing in return: absolute, permanent immunity for me, Leo, and Eleanor. The Commission, terrified of a war with Luca and satisfied with gaining his empire, accepted the terms.
Luca Moretti was no longer a mafia boss. He was just a man.
I stood on the back deck of the house, wearing a simple, flowing white sundress. There were no uniforms. No cruel mistresses. No fear.
I watched as Luca and Leo ran along the shoreline, the waves crashing against their bare feet. Leo was laughing hysterically, wearing Marco's old leather bracelet, which Luca had carefully resized to fit his small wrist. It wasn't a symbol of tragedy anymore. It was a symbol of family.
Luca scooped Leo up, threw him over his shoulder, and carried him back up the wooden steps toward me.
"Auntie Nat!" Leo giggled, breathless. "Luca said I can have a dog! A big one!"
I laughed, looking at Luca. "Oh, he did, did he?"
"Every boy needs a dog," Luca smiled, setting Leo down. "Go wash your hands, buddy. Lunch is almost ready."
Leo ran inside, his footsteps echoing happily through the house.
Luca turned to me. The harsh, calculating lines of his face had softened entirely over the last month. He looked at me with a depth of love that still took my breath away.
"The lawyers called this morning," Luca said quietly, stepping closer and taking my hands in his.
"And?" I asked, my heart skipping a beat.
"The adoption paperwork is finalized," Luca smiled, his dark eyes shining. "Leo is legally ours. The Syndicate can never claim him. David and Vanessa's rights are permanently terminated. He is officially a Moretti. But more importantly, he's legally your son."
Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled over my eyelashes. I had fought so hard for that little boy. I had risked everything for him. And now, nobody could ever take him away from me.
"Thank you," I whispered, throwing my arms around Luca’s neck.
Luca held me tight, burying his face in my neck. Then, he slowly pulled back.
He reached into his pocket.
He didn't pull out a velvet box. He pulled out the heavy, breathtaking diamond ring—his mother's ring—that he had placed in my hand on the morning after the engagement party.
He took a step back and slowly lowered himself onto one knee on the wooden deck.
"A month ago, I gave you this as a promise that you would never be afraid again," Luca said, his voice thick with emotion. "Today, I want to give it to you as a different kind of promise. A promise that I will spend the rest of my life making you happy. A promise to be a father to Leo. A promise to be a husband who deserves the bravest woman I've ever met."
I covered my mouth, the tears falling freely now.
"Natalie Brooks," Luca asked, looking up at me with absolute certainty. "Will you marry me?"
"Yes," I sobbed, laughing through the tears. "Yes, Luca. Absolutely, yes."
He slid the beautiful diamond ring onto my finger. It fit perfectly.
He stood up, pulling me into a deep, passionate kiss as the sound of the ocean crashed behind us.
Inside the house, Leo yelled something about wanting extra syrup on his pancakes.

Luca pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, and we both laughed.
The nightmare was finally, truly over. The secrets were buried. The past was forgiven. And as I looked at the man who had traded his empire for our safety, I knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that we had finally built a beautiful, unbreakable life.
