Chapter 7 - THE BLOOD ON THE WOOL

The heavy thud of the helicopter blades vibrated through the crystal chandeliers above the dining table.
Answer one: Vanessa was able to bypass Luca’s laptop security and stage her grand escape because Daniel, the head of security, was her inside man.
Open two: Why would Daniel, a man who had served the Moretti family for a decade, betray Luca for a woman he barely knew? And where were Natalie and Leo?
"Daniel," Luca said, his voice dangerously low. He didn't let go of Vanessa's arm. "You're pointing a gun at the head of the Moretti family. Do you have any idea what happens to men who do that?"
Daniel’s hand trembled slightly, but his aim remained true. "I know exactly what happens, Boss. But she promised me five million of the cut. I have debts. The syndicate wouldn't cover them."
"You sold your life for five million dollars?" Luca asked, shaking his head slowly. "She's playing you, Daniel. Look at the coat on the table. She kills the men who help her."
Vanessa sneered, wrenching her arm but failing to break Luca’s iron grip. "Shut up! Daniel, shoot him! The chopper is landing!"
"Let her go, Mr. Moretti," Daniel ordered, stepping further into the room. He grabbed Eleanor roughly by the shoulder, pulling the elderly woman in front of him as a human shield. "Let her walk, or the old lady takes the first bullet."
Eleanor whimpered, terrified, but her eyes remained locked on Vanessa with pure hatred.
Reversal: Luca knew he couldn't risk Eleanor's life. He slowly opened his hand, releasing Vanessa.
Vanessa instantly scurried away, smoothing her ruined red dress. She walked over to Daniel, her manic confidence returning. "Good boy," she purred, patting Daniel’s cheek. "Now, keep the gun on him while we get to the roof."
"What about the maid?" Daniel asked nervously. "I left her and the kid at the safehouse like he asked, but they'll talk."
"I don't care about the maid," Vanessa spat. "The boy is a loose end, but with sixty million, I can disappear anywhere in the world. Let's go."
Vanessa turned toward the hallway leading to the roof access stairs.
But as she took her first step, a small, terrifying sound echoed from the kitchen corridor.
It was the squeak of a small sneaker on the hardwood floor.
Vanessa stopped. Daniel swung the gun around.
Standing in the shadows of the kitchen doorway was little Leo. He was still wrapped in Luca's massive wool overcoat, dragging on the floor behind him. His striking green eyes were fixed entirely on Vanessa.
Behind him, limping heavily and completely out of breath, was Natalie.
"Leo, no!" Natalie cried, trying to grab him.
"Natalie!" Luca yelled. "Get down!"
But Leo didn't run. He walked slowly into the dining room, looking directly at the woman who had abandoned him to die in the snow six years ago.
Vanessa stared at the boy. The resemblance was undeniable. He had David’s jawline, but those eyes were a mirror of her own. For a split second, the cold, calculating sociopath cracked, replaced by a profound, horrified silence.
"Mommy?" Leo asked, his tiny voice cutting through the roar of the helicopter outside.
Vanessa stepped backward, shaking her head. "No. No, keep him away from me."
Cliffhanger: Leo didn't reach for her. Instead, he reached into the pocket of Luca's oversized coat and pulled out a heavy, black iron key.
He held it up toward Daniel.
"The nice man outside told me to give this to you," Leo said innocently. "He said you locked him out of the safehouse, but he found his own way back."

Daniel’s face drained of color. He looked at the iron key, realizing exactly what it was—the master override key for the estate's armory.
Before Daniel could react, the glass terrace doors shattered inward, and a massive figure stepped out of the darkness, racking a shotgun.
